I enjoy working with clients of all ages to build safer relationships. This is a place to learn how to communicate well and gain strength through self-care as well as stronger family and community connections. I am also LGBTQ+ identified and celebratory and enjoy supporting individual and family journeys toward greater understanding of sexual and gender identities. I partner to facilitate safer and more joyful spaces with Transgender and Gender Expansive folks (because we deserve it) and am excited to support open, polyamorous, ethically non-monogamous and other multiculturally diverse relationship and identity spaces.

"Well, this isn’t working! What do I do now?" If you are wondering this, I welcome whatever you have to discuss. I love to see a client walk into the room, bursting with the issues carried on the heart, and experience the relief that comes from finally sharing these burdens out loud in a safe space. I see mostly women and female adolescents, plus a few men who want to dig deep. I work best with people who are ready to explore, looking for change, but aren't sure of how to get there.

Thank you for reading my profile. It can be hard to ask for help. Over many years in practice I have studied many different theories and techniques of counseling and psychotherapy, so hopefully I can find ideas and tools to help you with whatever issues you bring. I do not claim to be the best therapist for everyone but I will do my best.

I am a Baby Boomer. I realize I have probably lived three-quarters of my life, during which I have experienced most of the situations one can experience throughout one's life. I still have a positive outlook on the time I have left, and I want all of my generation to feel that their presence on this earth has made a difference. I have counseled families who promised to "never put Mom in a nursing home". I have counseled those who never thought they would end up there. Retirees, divorcees, widows/widowers, empty nesters, mid-life crises, what's left now?, all are welcome. Latter life situations are my specialty.

One of the most difficult challenges we face as parents is watching your child struggle and not knowing how to help. Parents look for a therapist to help their child overcome trauma, aggression, impulsive behaviors, anxiety, and low self esteem. Developing a strong therapeutic relationship provides the safety and connection that is key for therapy to be helpful. It is the foundation from which to explore and understand your feelings and experiences. I am active and collaborative in listening, inquiring, and guiding your child and family. I want to help you and your family overcome the challenges and struggles that life brings.

Regardless of how painful, isolated, or destructive our actions are, when we discover enough pieces of the puzzle, people make sense. In this life, we experience pain and frustration. Questions and feelings around ourselves and our relationships point us to deeper questions about suffering, purpose, or meaning. To avoid these, we do any number of things - we build coping skills that become addictions and compulsions and break down our relationship with ourselves and others.

I provide counseling and consultative services. With the help of my colleague, Mark Shively, we also provide training using biofeedback technology. As a counselor, my role is to listen, discern strengths and vulnerabilities, and invite growth/advancement from those placing trust in my care. As a consultant, I strive to provide fair/impartial answers (in the manner of a scientist) to posed questions. Cognitive-behavioral training can address many thought patterns, behaviors and physiological states (such as stress).

Symptoms/issues that I most often see are anxiety, depression, grief, self-esteem, parenting issues, divorce, trauma, life transitions, emotion regulation/anger management, and others. I work with minors (ages 3 and up), adults, and families. In addition to in-session work with clients, I offer court-related services to further advocate for clients' emotional and mental well-being. A niche and passion that I have is working with victims of abuse. I have first-hand understanding and life experience to treat the traumatic emotional and mental effects of difficult relationship experiences.

Healthy relationships are not the mystery that most of us believe them to be. Love may be the reason that we commit to a relationship, but few know how to sustain that wonderful, secure feeling. There are skills that all of us must learn in order to create and manage our relationships so that our dreams don't go the way of statistics and have us end up separated from our loved one. While individual therapy has been linked to worsening relationship issues, my research-based training provides the opposite: HOPE. Let me work with you to stop the negative patterns that are taking you away from the partnership you wish to have.

I have known since I was a teenager that I wanted to be a social worker. It was when I was 14 that an LCSW was able to connect with me and help me through a dark depression and the amplified anxiety that often goes along with it. It has been my passion since then to provide that same help to others. I have 15 years of experience working in the mental health field, 10 of those as an LCSW. I have experience with individual therapy and group therapy modalities, both on an outpatient and an inpatient basis.

You are worthy and you are enough. Those seven words can feel like an unreachable mindset, I know. Trauma, abuse, neglect, grief, and the weight of caring for others more than yourself can make that phrase feel hollow. Anxiety, depression, flashbacks, nightmares, and isolation are truly exhausting. If you are reading this, I want you to know you are not alone and you’ve already taken the only step you have to on your own: you’ve done the hard work of reaching out. FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Chattanooga?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
