What is body psychotherapy? One way to define it is to emphasize the word "body" over "psycho-" because in its pure form body psychotherapy is not about emotional and psychological problems per-se, but about how the body as a whole relates to these. Instead of starting with the mind, trying to figure things out by what they mean and how to relate to them, there is a more gentle, diffuse process in body-oriented work. In fact, the mind, previously the subject of therapy, becomes your tool for opening access to the whole body.
And, the body, when you have access to it, will slow down its physiological activity, allowing excess mental energy to be drawn down to the calmer, more regulated state of the body. Body awareness (the use of your natural capacity to sense the body) is the basic tool.
How is body awareness used?: 1, to deepen and fine-tune conscious awareness and presence in the body and body systems. 2, to bring this awareness and presence to situations that normally trigger negative reactions. Somatic therapy sessions help develop these skills and identify particular strategies to meet individual situations.
