Matthew R Chirman, MS, LMFT, LPCC, Marriage & Family Therapist in San Luis Obispo
For the last 17 years I have worked successfully with adult clients dealing with a wide range of issues including marital and relationship problems, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, abuse issues, personality issues and other relationship and mental health concerns. I believe a trusting relationship between the therapist and client is the foundation for all growth and change. However, the relationship itself is typically not sufficient. I will help you set goals for your therapy based upon what you would like to have different in your life, and together we will explore and change the blocks which have prevented you from achieving your goals.
I specialize in and enjoy working with challenging problems that have been resistant to change. While I have advanced training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Developmental Couples Therapy, I use a variety of therapeutic approaches including mindfulness, skills building, stress reduction and psycho-education, all within a supportive, client-centered context.
I believe that group therapy is often more powerful than individual therapy. I offer group therapy for clients dealing with Borderline Personality Disorder, as well as a BPD Family Support Group. Groups provide the opportunity for shared wisdom and experience, and for building a supportive therapeutic community.
