Beginning therapy is a big deal. Talking about oneself to someone you’ve never met before can be daunting. Will you be judged? Given advice you didn’t ask for? Not given feedback you really need? You’ve probably been grappling with the issues that prompted you to make the appointment for some time, and may feel badly that you couldn’t figure it out yourself. In that first session I’ll be listening to understand what’s the matter but also how you’re experiencing the problem. We may need to work together to shift self-criticism and judgment to curiosity and compassion so that you can mobilize your inner strengths.
Sheltering in place because of the the coronavirus can add to what might be an already strained relationship with your partner. There's nowhere to go to avoid the issues that have been there all along. This could be an opportunity to unpack what's been troubling each of you. My priority is to make is safe to talk, in the office as well as when you go home.
