Lavanya Shankar, PhD, Psychologist in Austin
I enjoy working with people with various concerns. What typically underlies the concerns people bring in is some sort of difficulty in understanding and utilizing their emotional life. This may lead to hindrances in personal growth or in relationships. My role is to help clients understand themselves so they can move beyond those hindrances that impede them from living fuller lives. An important part of this work is to harness and utilize clients' emotional lives to serve them in moving towards the things they want. The outcome can be a greater sense of well-being, richer relationships, and increased capacity to face life's challenges.
Research tells us that meaningful change occurs within the context of relationship. So I pay close attention to the therapeutic relationship as an important agent of change in therapy. For this reason, I also consider group therapy to be a really good choice for clients at times.
My style is to be deeply engaged and present. I enjoy bringing intuition and creativity into my work. At times the work may feel more serious and at other times we may experience humor and playfulness. I invite a broad range of emotional experience into the room.
