My specialties include anxiety issues, alcohol and substance use disorders, trauma, bipolar disorder, compulsive behaviors, relationship and situational issues.
I practice solution-based therapy. During our first meeting, we will discuss your goals and determine if I am the right therapist to assist you in meeting them. If so, I will work with you in a safe, collaborative, confidential space to solve the issues that bring us together. We assess our progress as we go to make sure that I am hearing and understanding you, and that you are getting what you need from our work together.

Previously I trained in NYC in working with substance abuse and find combining therapy with 12 step programs to be very effective.
Crucial to my work is helping people to find what works for them; it's not always easy to figure out the best path in life or in therapy. If I can't be of optimal help, I always offer other resources. I establish a partnership and offer suggestions of alternative behaviors to try between sessions. My goal is not compliance with the suggestions, but awareness of the experience of either trying the new behavior or considering it and rejecting it. Either way, we learn.

I began my career in mental health in 1981 in addiction treatment.
Research has shown that the primary factors involved in change in a therapeutic setting are the clients' internal strengths. The second most important factor is the relationship between the client and the therapist. At the very core, therapy is about a healing relationship. This is what a prospective client should ask regarding a therapist when entering therapy: is it a relationship that is conducive to your growth, whatever your goals?

I have extensive experience working with those struggling with addiction with a strong focus on problem gambling and gambling disorder.
Our lives are often filled with ups and downs, twists and turns, most of which we can usually navigate quite well on our own. Sometimes, the challenges we encounter can become overwhelming and we may need help to get through them. And sometimes talking to someone who understands what you’re going through and speaks your language can make all the difference. I'm a clinical psychologist and military veteran with specializations in military psychology, addictive disorders, trauma treatment, and treatment of anxiety and depression-related disorders.

I come from a long line of individuals who suffered both mental health and substance use disorders.
Congratulations, you've taken the first step toward emotional well-being. Seeking help is a sign of strength. The past few years have been a disorienting and tumultuous time. With recent landmark rulings it doesn't look like it will be getting easier anytime soon. But you don't have to go through it alone. I believe you'll find me empathic, curious and as a client once told me, "You care and you keep it real." I believe this to be true because this is my second career. My life experience has enabled me to walk in many people's shoes. Now I'd like to walk beside you on your journey.

Disconnection from our true selves may lead to issues communicating with loved ones, career dissatisfaction, decreased sense of self-worth, substance use, or playing a role in this world you never asked for.
Establishing yourself, and your identity, is a lifelong process. You are not alone when you face questions including: Who am I? What is my purpose? Who do I want in my life? What do I stand for? Why am I here? When we consider these questions, along with countless others branching from these, you might find yourself overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or frustrated. Attempting to navigate this process, you may face societal expectations, dysfunctional family dynamics, economic challenges or other stressors operating against you. While desire to be stable, authentic, and true to self is shared, your story will always be unique.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
