Tricia has a large family that has been her motivation to continue her own path in recovery and journey in self-discovery.
Tricia bases her work in Pia Mellody's approach with relationships and codependency. She is experienced with individuals who are experiencing distress and shame because of addiction, codependency, and difficult relationships. Tricia is an interactive, solution-focused therapist. She has learned through her own experiences how important it is to have someone hear clients' stories as they navigate how to effectively address personal life challenges. Tricia works with each individual to help them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing.

When a newly recovering family attempts to navigate their old surroundings, it can be stressful and frustrating.
When working with clients, I utilize a client-centered, collaborative approach. I focus on meaning, encouragement, and support to help my clients obtain awareness, understanding, and acceptance of themselves. I approach the counseling relationship from a perspective of "meaning making" which suggests that people act on what they believe about situations, not the situation itself. Together, we use that knowledge as a basis to explore, assess, illuminate, unravel, and move forward through obstacles towards a goal-oriented outcome.

My background in family systems approach was the grounding in our studies at SDSU.
I have been working in the mental health field for over 40 years. I started working in mental health facilities in my early 20's while I was in college. I have worked with adults and adolescents in all kinds of modalities, yet I seemed to focus more toward young people and their families with substance abuse problems and anxiety. Some of that stems from having to deal with my own addictions in my late teens and finally getting clean and sober at age 20. Thus, I understand what it is like to be overwhelmed by addiction and the need to engage in a recovery process.

Life today is complicated & has so many new stressors (political polarization, climate change, social media, gambling, family, work) many people are feeling anxious in ways they never have before.
As a therapist, I partner with the person I am working with and we collaboratively explore options that may fit your needs and bring you where you want to be, and how you want to be in your life. I am available for TeleHealth Sessions throughout Colorado. If you are wanting to tackle issues such as Addiction, Codependency, Trauma, Sexuality, Unmanageable Stress and Anxiety, Gambling, ADD, Feeling Intimidated by a Life Transition ("What is next?") or Feeling Stuck and wanting to make Personal or Career Changes we may want to meet. I use Brainspotting, talk therapies, and a variety of other treatment methods like CBT, MI, & DBT.

Are you a woman facing painful sex, fertility problems, relationship struggles, or both? Do you have a health situation you don't feel like you can talk about because "you look fine"? Have you ever experienced a significant trauma or sexual assault? Do you have relationship issues that are affected by any of these things? Health problems and recovering from trauma is scary, then the way that people respond to them can make us feel like our problems are minimized and invalidated. This can make us feel alone, helpless, terrified, as well as frustrated with the responses of people around us. -now offering EMDR

We would be honored to help navigate and support you and/or your family's personal growth and development.
We are all human and we all have feelings. Many times, those feelings affect the thoughts we experience and thus affect our lifestyle, our relationships, our loved ones, our jobs, our opportunities, and so much more. The feelings and thoughts begin from the stressors we encounter, the unexpected situations that arise, the memories we have experienced, and then suddenly we are at a loss of how to move forward in making life decisions.

My teacher Brene Brown has said, "Owning our story and loving ourselves through the process is the bravest thing we will ever do." As a Psychologist with 35 + years in practice, I continue to study discoveries in neuroscience and human behavior, and while I'm glad of that, what I know is that counseling is about talking through the hard stuff - shame, blame, fear, anger, criticism, grief, forgiveness, and all the rest. Tell me your story in all of its messiness, and let's figure out what's to be done about it. I welcome adults 18 and up struggling with most of what life dishes up. I promise to be candid and compassionate.

You wake up in the mornings and you don’t feel rested. You’re feeling irritable and you’ve been arguing with your coworkers. You struggle to stay present, and you’re having a hard time focusing on your work. Anxiety and overwhelm weigh heavy on you, but you’re holding it all in so that you can prioritize everyone else’s needs. You’re struggling, and you feel burned out. It’s time to do something about it and put yourself first.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
