Most people have difficulty navigating major changes at some stage of life. I treat individuals, couples and families with such developmental or adjustment difficulty or general mental health issues such as depression & anxiety. I offer counseling for marital and relationship issues either with the couple or one of the individuals if the other is resistant to couples therapy. Other frequently seen issues include dealing with loss of partner or friend or family member due to death or divorce, and the problems associated with work or school stress.

Have you ever wondered if you will always feel this way? Maybe you feel alone or like no one understands who you are. Perhaps you struggle with relationships, jobs, family dynamics and anxiety about all of these struggles. You do not have to do this alone and unsupported. If you want someone to accompany you on your path to recognizing your strengths and using them, I would be honored to walk with you.

In addition to symptom reduction, therapy often focuses on (re)building meaningful relationships with family, friends, and important others.
Finding a therapist that is a good fit for you is pivotal to a beneficial and meaningful experience in therapy. A strong therapeutic relationship is the vehicle for change and the strongest predictor of treatment success. My international education encouraged me to adopt a flexible, curious, and inclusive perspective on the factors that contribute to one's identity and difficulties (e.g., religion, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, etc.). I strive to create a safe and non-judgmental space to support clients' introspective journeys, exploration of identities, and understanding of the self, others, and the world.

I have personal and professional experience in working with clients that have experienced trauma, identity issues, toxic masculinity, marital and family issues, and drug, alcohol, and behavioral addictions.
As a trained clinician and someone who has benefited from therapy myself, I know how terrifying it can be to consider going to a counselor. My goal with all of my clients is to put them at ease by caring for and accepting them just as they are, and to understand the issues they are facing. I want to know what your needs and goals are, and help you create a roadmap to accomplish your goals. I want to understand what you want, and why, so that I can tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs and expectations.

Control-based parenting practices simply are not effective, particularly with children already suffering from broken, disrupted attachment, leaving the entire family system exhausted and overwhelmed.
If you are broken and in need of healing from abuse and trauma and/or are trying to parent a "child forgotten" you have come to the right place. Suffering through the aftermath of sexual abuse, domestic violence, emotional abuse, foster care and extreme neglect often makes it nearly impossible to trust others, which is a necessary starting point for healthy relationship formation. Built to Bond, Inc. is designed to enable you to make sense of your trauma and begin the healing process from a Christian perspective through the "Treat PTSD with PTSD to get PTSD" treatment modality.

I have been in professional psychological practice since 1979, been married many years, raised 2 children and shared in raising 3 step-children, so I have many years of clinical and personal experience on which to draw. However, I am always learning and growing, and enjoy sharing the journey of self-discovery with my clients/patients. I tailor my psychological treatment with individuals (adults, adolescents, and children), couples, and families to each person's unique situation. I utilize a variety of different treatment approaches, depending on the problems presented, ranging from cognitive-behavioral, insight, family systems, to supportive reality therapy.

I use ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy) and IFS (Internal Family Systems).
Visit my website to see my real-time availability and request an appointment. "I don't need to talk about it." That may be what you have always believed, but life keeps happening and now you don't know what else to do. It could be that you feel like no one has ever really understood or accepted you as you are, or maybe something traumatic has happened. Maybe you're in a relationship with someone you love, but you can't seem to make it work, or maybe you feel shame after turning toward an addiction to fill the emptiness. At some point, everything that used to work stops working and you wonder if you will ever be happy again.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
