As a Licensed Psychotherapist, Author, and Educator, I bring 28 years of clinical expertise and 20 years of teaching experience to my practice. I firmly believe that successful therapy requires an eclectic, progressive, evidenced based psychotherapeutic approach coupled (when necessary) with a deep understanding of the healthcare system. When working with clients, I prioritize solution-oriented, effective symptom relief methods. Recognizing the complexity of individuals, I address psychological and emotional concerns within the broader context of family dynamics, self-perception, work-related stress, and physical health.

I am also trained in and draw on CBT, relational psychoanalytic approaches, meditation perspectives, Jungian psychology, Schema Therapy, and other good stuff.
I mostly work in an Internal Family Systems (IFS), relational way. To me that means working in therapy towards having good enough internal harmony. Life is hard and life is amazing. Because life can be hard, we often have to get into intense, protective relationships with ourselves. Then parts of us can be pushed into the shadows. So we can wind up feeling "out of whack" and living our daily lives can be harder. Therapy can help us work with our multifaceted psychology so that we then have greater internal friendship and harmony. That can then translate into our relationships, our work, and our lives in the world.

He has written 50 professional papers, is the Co-President of the International Forum for Psychoanalytic Education and a past member of the Divorce Magazine Advisory Board.
The most important ingredient in a successful therapy experience is the therapy relationship itself. The clients who benefit the most are those who feel understood, respected and cared about, and so are better able to be more genuine and more fully engaged in the process. A basic tenet of my approach is that our fears and hurts inhibit the natural tendency within us all to grow and move toward healthier ways of functioning. Individuals who feel safe enough in therapy to face their fears can begin to "digest" their unfinished business and take back control of their lives.

My training is in the psychoanalytic tradition, meaning that special attention is paid to unconscious factors that may be influencing your experience of yourself and your relationships.
I work with people who want to overcome personal obstacles that seem to recur again and again. While it is sometimes possible to face such issues alone, you may reach the point where another set of eyes and ears is necessary. Difficulties such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, trust, and anger issues, can be more complex than they first appear. Together, we will pay close attention to the way you experience yourself and others. Over time, you may begin to see and do things differently and with a greater sense of freedom and authenticity.

I completed training at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute's Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy program and am currently a Candidate at the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis.
As a psychotherapist with over 18 years of experience in clinics, schools, businesses, and private practice, I view therapy as a chance for growth, healing, and change. We will work together to identify how relationships and the systems we reside in inform our life experiences. My clinical training in mindfulness, somatic work, and psychoanalytic-informed therapy form the basis for understanding symptoms, working through overwhelming experiences, and creating the possibility of new meaning. I am also informed by developmental perspectives when working with children and their families.

My approach is psychodynamic, which includes psychoanalytic concepts.
Transitional times in your life sometimes creates angst and stress, which can show up in our bodies in a physical way, as well as, in our relationships. This is an ideal time to engage in therapy. These transitions can occur anywhere in your life; relationship conflict, a break-up, parenting concerns, navigating a new job or a geographical move, graduate school, divorce, family concerns, and health crises, as well as others, which all might result in anxiety or depression.

I work with folks of all ages who may be reacting to stresses at work, school, or in relationships, or unhappy with depression, anxiety, ADHD, or trauma. A psychiatrist therapist is just that. Before the first visit, I will first send you medical and other questionnaires to bring with you so we can remain thorough and focused only on your needs. You can usually count on some relief and a clear plan when you leave. Most of my patients see a gradual lifting of symptoms within the first week or two and sustained improvement thereafter.

My idea of an ideal client is one who is brave enough to ask for help. We are not born with innate problem solving skills in all areas of life. Every one of us is unique and have different experiences and outlooks on life. When there is a lack of cohesion in ones life or struggles in relationships, emotional issues, we may need to reach out to a professional for guidance. Even clients who are less than cooperative or unwilling to engage in therapy can be helped with a good therapist. I can provide that guidance and help you be the best "you" you can be. We've only got one life to live. The goal is, to live it well!

We all experience emotional and physical difficulties from time to time. Often we are able to deal with these life experiences ourselves. Sometimes, however, it is not possible for us to resolve these challenges alone. In these situations professional help is appropriate. Until fifty years ago anyone experiencing psychological and/or physical stress was treated individually. Family therapy grew out of a simple but profound idea: People in crisis can often be best understood and treated within their own famiies. As a certified family therapist, as well as a certified psychoanalyst, I have the education necessary to see both famiies and individuals.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
