As an international, transracial adoptee, I am passionate about helping other adoptees navigate their experiences with grief/loss, identity, and other adoption-related issues.
As a therapist, I practice a holistic approach because I believe all aspects of a client and their experiences are important in providing effective treatment. I have experience working with a wide range of clients of all ages and diagnoses. My goal for all of my clients is to build a relationship of mutual trust, respect, and communication, as well as a safe environment that fosters vulnerability and honesty. Based on individual nuances, I strive to incorporate principles and skills from various theoretical models, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectic Behavioral Therapy.

A non-judgmental environment where you can explore your real feelings can make a world of difference and help you find solutions that are right for you. If you are feeling depressed, anxious, irritable, or overwhelmed; are unhappy and don't know why; if you keep having the same pattern of problems at work or in your relationships; or if you simply want more out of life, therapy can help you achieve change in unexpected ways. Change can come through understanding how childhood shaped your experience of self and others. We collaborate to help you grow at your own pace.

"When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves". A person, child or adult able to reflect and build on themselves will be able to do great things when they can seek guidance and help. Experience with suffering is a strength I see in my clients that has given them tools for growth that many others may lack. Someone who is in need of guidance, challenging, and strength building will be able to get their needs met from our sessions. Self care is hard, it's work, but with help this work can become much more manageable.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a stress-free existence? To be able to put every worry and sadness aside? Unfortunately, no one possesses that sort of magic, what we can do is make a meaningful life where we can reduce stress, sadness, and worry and engage in the things that make this life meaningful with therapy. Too many of us are stuck wondering how to calm our brains, find our place, and feel good about who we are. If this describes you I hope I can be of service.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
