For many years I have enjoyed offering individual, couple, family, and group therapy to clients working on depth issues to achieve intrapsychic and behavioral change as well as improved relationships with others. The goal is not only resolution of relationship, behavioral, and emotional distress, but also discovery of personal meaning in life. Relationship counseling includes relationship to self as well as to others. Couples counseling includes coupling at all stages and with all types of couples. My counseling theory of practice is based primarily in family systems, experiential, and client centered counseling concepts. See www.watereecounseling.com

In my experience, for positive changes to occur, you must identify and build upon your faith, individual and family strengths for effective and lasting sustainability.
After the death of my 21-year old son due to a homicide, my life as I once knew it, changed forever. This horrific experience has taught me that you do not get over your grief, you strive to get through and beyond it. This is not like the five stages of grief one experiences during an expected loss of a loved one, you do not progress step by step, but you can get through it. Our loss may be the same but our path will be different. If you are feeling hopeless and/or overwhelmed in your grief, contact me for a consultation.

I approach therapy from a systemic perspective and view the individual as interconnected with each family member and other individuals within their environment.
When individuals become physically ill, they often work toward improving their health through self-care or visits to their doctor. However, many individuals neglect proper self-care by not addressing their mental health and wellness. We all experience difficult times that impact our ability to manage how we think, feel and behave. Our mental health impacts our physical health and consequently, when we are depressed or stressed, we tend to become ill easily, which in turn affects how we interact with others. I want to assist you in making your mind, body and spirit connection for your total wellness.

Greetings. I will not be accepting new clients until May 2024.- Living in a society where you live by everyone's standards except your own is challenging and frustrating. You may be anxiously trying to be accepted into a society who may look negatively on your values. You may be depressed by constantly seeking validation in ways you may not have approved of before. Your personality may be enticed by distorted thinking, and you may be facing an identity crisis. These are just a few ways how you may be faced with emotional struggles. No matter what you are facing, you have found someone that can help you be your true self.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
