I am the sole clinician at my new private practice, Dr Jennifer G Smith LLC. I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist who provides individual and group psychotherapy and have over 10 years of clinical experience providing mental health service to adults. I see myself as client-centered and relational in my clinical work and take an integrative approach to treatment. One of the most important aspects of counseling to me is making sure my client feels safe and heard. I view it as a privilege to be invited into someone's world and asked for help, so I meet the client where they are and we make a plan together.

I will partner with you to Live the Life YOU Want to Live. My therapy approach is YOU-centered. I work with each client exactly where you are, without judgement. We find ourselves trapped in ways of doing things that may have worked in the past or just helped us survive, but now you're in a place in your life where you are done with just surviving. You want to live. You want to live the way you want to live, that works for you right here and now, not the way your brain is telling you that you have to live like you did in the past.

You are sad, isolated, & anxious but you're too ashamed or embarrassed to tell anyone about it. You feel constant guilt for opportunities missed. You're confused because your life looks good on paper. You force a smile but inside feel despair, worry, and don't know how to cope. You can't find peace because your thoughts are racing. You get angry at situations that don't make any sense. At times, you are stressed out and can't find the energy to get out of bed. You focus on what you did wrong in the past. You have lost confidence in yourself. Your routine feels pointless; things that used to bring you joy are no longer enjoyable.

*Currently offering telehealth appointments only* I work with adults and adolescents and have experience helping with a wide range of issues. The only prerequisite for therapy is that you or your loved ones are suffering and would like some help. Where appropriate and useful, I prefer to work intensively in an exploratory and supportive capacity to attend to long-standing and entrenched problems that seem resistant to change. If your goal is better self-understanding, enduring growth, and becoming more comfortable in your own skin, we may be a good match.

I am passionate about helping others find unique and creative solutions to problems. I believe in the ability to utilize art and craft as a way of both coping with and processing these challenges and traumas, along side traditional talk therapy. I am supportive of lifestyles outside of the "normative" culture, and see the beauty in these differences. Understanding the way our personal core values interact with the values of the world around us gives us the opportunity to feel safe and secure in our decisions and actions.

We enjoy working with clients who are open to understanding how adverse life experiences negatively impact thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and are ready to do the work of exploring these connections in therapy. We strive to build relationships with our clients based on the foundations of curiosity and empathy in a collaborative setting that is goal-oriented and relaxed, where their true self can be seen and feel accepted. Our overarching hope for clients is that through therapy they would believe they have inherent worth and value as human beings, apart from what they do, have, or what other people think and say about them.

Existential Therapists

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
