Everyone needs a safe place to express their thoughts, feelings, hopes and fears. Sometimes that means seeking out a professional. Someone who can listen, support, and assist in helping to overcome obstacles or reduce emotional pain. This is my ultimate goal for everyone with whom I work. I have been working in the field of counseling for 18 years and have experience working with a wide variety of individuals. Some need help adjusting to a life change. Others have experienced significant trauma or struggle with suicidal thoughts. Mostly, I am here to meet you where you are at and to help you reach your goals.

Life can take many a difficult turn. A sudden tragedy, abrupt life change, or physical loss can leave us not knowing how to handle the emotional distress. Sometimes we find ourselves struggling to cope in a relationship that once was beautiful. Young families with developing children can begin experiencing great conflict for no apparent reason. The anxiety and depression we feel because of past neglect, abuse, or trauma can become overwhelming even years after the fact. Some of us feel like we have always been broken. Good news! There is healing. There is hope. There is a brighter tomorrow with a new, joyful outlook on life.

I specialize in trauma work and use of EMDR to resolve symptoms of PTSD.
I work with an eclectic approach to therapy. By forming a strong, therapeutic alliance the client and counselor embark on a journey toward shared treatment goals. My theoretical approach to counseling enlists pieces of cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and interpersonal psychotherapy. With evidence-based treatment practices, the client can learn new methods of coping with mental health distress. One main area of focus is the treatment of trauma. Too often, clients have attended counseling with no relief of symptoms and have revealed that the trauma they experienced was unaddressed. As a Certified Trauma Specialist, I am passionate about helping clients heal from traumatic experiences.

I have trained/worked with clients dealing with trauma, anxiety, and relationships.
Sometimes life can feel like a rollercoaster that we somehow can’t seem to exit, don’t know how we got on it in the first place, and are then having to white knuckle it as best as possible. That is why I went into this field to not only learn tools to help others work through challenges, but also provide a space to feel safe, seen, and fully understood without judgement. My goal as a therapist is to walk alongside you, help you grow, and help curate security with yourself, your relationships, and feel more emotionally balanced.

I am not your conventional psychotherapist. My journey into the world of mental health is uniquely shaped by my background as a ski journalist and lived experiences of grief, loss, tragedy, and trauma. Driven by a desire to bridge my passion for storytelling with holistic healing, I use my sincere interest in the human experience in the therapy setting to treat adults, couples, and families living with shame, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, addiction, and life transitions and questions. As the Sufi poet Rumi once wrote, “The cure for pain is in the pain.”

It takes tremendous strength and courage to reach out and seek help, especially if you work in a profession that has traditionally dealt with trauma, depression, and other forms of distress using the "suck it up and get on with it" method.
*I currently only have availability for emergency responders.* When the people who help everyone else finally decide that it's time to get help for themselves, it often means they have tried everything they can think of before coming to a site like psychology today to find a therapist. I specialize in working with emergency responders, crisis-oriented professionals like nurses and clinicians, and others who are used to being the ones who solve others' problems. Trauma, burnout, depression, PTSI, PTSD, and all of the impacts these things have on a person and on relationships - these are things that can be treated!

I use various therapeutic approaches in my practice; holistic, strength, trauma base are a few.
Life is a beautiful thing until one day you wake up to a nightmare. Feeling anger, anxious, betrayal, broken, defeated, loss, pain, or overwhelmed; unsure how to express your emotions or continue to live. Tired of hearing you are strong when in all actuality you feel yourself suffocating. I have been there and it is valid if you are too. A wise man once told me attack life's trials one nano second at a time and allow no one to take you out of your happy bubble. It's not the misery we face but the steps we take to overcoming those adversities to embrace your greatness. Healing is forever time to be free ReNana Your HeArt with me!

I specialize in areas of anxiety, depression, relationship issues, teen defiance, and trauma recovery.
I have over ten years of experience working with teens and adults under 50. Most of my clients, both male and female, are in some form of transition in their lives. These transitions present themselves as maturation struggles, changing relationships, questioning perspectives, contemplating choices, and finding difficulty with what currently faces them in their lives. These are the times when a trusted assistant is helpful. My clients need to know that they have a safe place, without judgement, to work through their struggles. I provide trust, support, education, and new skills training with each client.

I am an EMDR practitioner and I view therapy through a humanistic and trauma-informed lens.
I love to work with female, male, and LGBTQ professionals who experienced hurtful childhoods or abusive relationships and struggle to let go of the past, feel "like they are not enough", "have to prove their worth", or "settle for less". I love to help clients understand why they continuously attract "the wrong partner" so they can make different choices, move on from hurtful relationships, and attract more suitable partners. I welcome polyamory, kink, and sex-positivity. I enjoy helping clients get past traumatic experiences so they can feel safe in their bodies again and courageous about taking up space in their lives.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
