Whether you're experiencing a transition, a loss or feeling a sense of being lost and craving deeper meaning you are not alone. Anxiety, depression, chronic pain, loneliness, grief, a sense of disappointment or endings of all manner can throw us off balance. Add more than one and we can genuinely be struggling and it may be difficult for others to see the reasons for our withdrawal or anxious behaviours. There can be no judgment in the therapeutic relationship, which honours your inner strength, hopes to draw forth your resilience and begin to find your way through challenging landscapes and into deeper connections that enrich us.

Are you stuck or struggling in life? Feelings like anxiety, fear, anger, depression, and hopelessness can linger after stressful, tragic events or losses. I want to help you overcome these symptoms and guide you through the process of grief and healing. As Gabor Maté reminds us, “Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you”. In accepting that ‘we’ are not our circumstance, we can rise and become better able to secure a sense of peace and connection with ourselves and our loved ones. The goal is to help you grow from your struggles, heal from your pain, and move forward to where you want to be in your life.

Coming to therapy may feel daunting and overwhelming. These feelings or any others that may arise are entirely normal. Reaching out for support may be a big step and moment to celebrate. I work from a trauma-informed lens where we ask, "What happened to you?" instead of "What is wrong with you?". I understand that your life experiences have impacted how you see and interact with the world. Your perception, thoughts, feelings, emotions, and behaviours are present to keep you safe and are valid. Sometimes, what was once adaptive is no longer serving you.

Within my practice, I specialize in working with children and adolescents and adults, specifically adults looking for parenting support/coaching and mothers entering into the world of parenting (prenatal, pregnancy, postpartum). My therapeutic approach is an eclectic one, one that is flexible to the needs of my client. It is very important to know that therapy is not a “one size fits all” approach and therefore I find flexibility in my approach to be imperative. I offer therapeutic approaches in the realm of talk, art, and play therapy. I have training in a variety of therapeutic approaches making my approach flexible to your needs.

Everyday stress, overwhelming life events and/or trauma can have significant impacts on our mental and physical well-being. In an attempt to relieve this suffering, we may develop certain coping strategies over time. Although these coping strategies may be unhealthy or unhelpful in some way, they signify your strength and resilience. If you are having difficulties connecting with your own resiliency, or the intensity of your emotions feels too overwhelming to navigate on your own, finding support and guidance in a responsible therapeutic relationship is a good place to start.

I believe deeply in the transformative power of a non-judgemental space where all of you is welcome. In the past, you may have made the wise choice to separate from who you were to create safety. In the present, this fragmentation can give rise to anxiety, depression, disordered eating, aggression/anger, and an overall feeling of being lost and purposeless—all contributing to difficulty in everyday life. I see my role as a compassionate companion, walking along side clients on their journey back home to their authentic self, by supporting their innate capacity for growth and change.

You know what’s universal? Struggle. We can’t get rid of life’s problems; they’re inevitable and trying to avoid them is a lesson in exhaustion. What we can do is: learn to practice acceptance; to grow, to heal and work toward living our best, most meaningful lives. I provide a safe and compassionate space for clients who struggle with any of life’s problems. I connect and collaborate with my clients during their healing journey to address their current lives, and any personal history that continues to impact daily life.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
