In 2014, I was appointed a Training and Supervising Analyst by the American Psychoanalytic Association, meaning I can analyze or supervise candidates in analytic training.
Although I have experience treating a broad array of diagnostic categories, my approach is centered on treating the whole person. I look toward an understanding of the behaviors, thoughts, feelings, and ways of interacting that individuals repeat in spite of a wish to behave differently. My focus is on helping patients hear beyond what they know themselves to be saying, which, in my experience, allows individuals to feel more freedom and less angst in being in the world. I find that I am most helpful with people who want to know themselves better, or feel differently on a deep level.

My style is grounded in modern, evidence-based psychoanalytic therapy.
Life's challenges are best understood contextually and faced collaboratively. I believe we, as a society, have built a world that does not account for what we need to thrive. Because of this, I see my clients as courageous to ask for help in navigating it. In counseling, I provide a warm, supportive and, at times, challenging environment in service of your growth. If you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, anger, or other patterns that are not working, I strive to provide a space for us to do the work of healing together. I work with adults of all ages.

Integrative medicine, as defined by the U.S. Government’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, explores many treatment avenues, working with patients to heal the whole person, not just one organ system. In our moments of quiet reflection, which are often fleeting in today's fast-paced world, we may find ourselves listening to an inner monologue that is in limbo. Perhaps you feel there is no time to sort through all of your thoughts and feelings, and you're stuck in "go-mode", juggling the day to day but not living your life to the fullest. This stress may manifest as substance misuse, relationship conflict, avoidance, feeling "numb", neglecting one's self-care, work or school problems, parenting challenges, and more. These challenges, if the origins are not understood, can reinforce feelings of failure and self-doubt.

My ideal client is one who is invested in the therapy process as I am, and motivated to work in and out of session. My ideal client is ready to try new things and willing to look deeply inside. When these elements are in place, therapy tends to progress nicely.

Individuals who are looking to better understand themselves, to identify and handle their emotions effectively, those who seek a meaning in life or who have lost their way. Therapy should be a safe place where you can express yourself freely to achieve a better organization of your thoughts, ideas and feelings. The ideal client can be one who knows what they want as well as one who does not know why they feel a certain unpleasant way when life is going well.

We all want to be happy, to have a mind and heart at ease. And yet for so many of us, our minds are caught in worry about the future and regrets about the past. We feel stressed and overwhelmed. Our relationships may be fraught with conflict or distant and unsatisfying. And yet happiness is not so far away as it might sometimes seem. It is a practice that we can learn to cultivate in each moment. Therapy is no guarantee that we will always be happy, but with patience and dedication, each of us has the capacity to become happier, more loving, and more self-realized.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
