I specialize in treating grief and trauma, using EMDR in matters of unresolved disturbance. Whether someone suffers physical pain, anxiety, or the inability to sleep due to nightmares or disruptive memories, eye movement desensitization reprocessing can help alleviate the trauma of PTSD to help put the pieces of one’s life together following a disturbing event. Trauma takes many different forms as does healing, and healing disturbance is as individual as the individual him/herself. The best part of working with clients is helping to restore joy and insight to the client’s vision for life.

Your life is a challenge. I'm here to help you meet that challenge. At our first meeting, expect that you'll feel comfortable in an environment that stress-free with no judgement. If we can't change your perspective, let's try changing your situation. We'll process cycles of emotional and behavioral problems in an effort to lead lives that are happier and more fulfilling. At the end of therapy, our goal is to reduce the impact of previous and on-going negative influences on your life.

Let’s do something different! What if we could lighten up in the therapy room? What if playfulness can actually support deep growth? In 30+ years of personal development and therapy experiences, I’ve learned that “talking about it” only goes so far. My clients and I play with all-inclusive, embodied methods to meet ourselves authentically and thoroughly, and to effectively process emotions and subconscious programming.

Some of my favorites include: art, EMDR for trauma, and Child Centered Play therapy for younger children.
My goal is to help others find peace in their lives. I love working with families who struggle to maintain a calm home because It Is Hard! Sometimes we find it’s ourselves that block peace. I also very much enjoy helping all ages individually find out what triggers them and how to regulate to find peace in themselves.

In addition to regular talk therapy, we provide art and creative opportunities and activities if you are willing to express yourself that way.
Admitting that you need help can be a very difficult thing. Trying to get help can be even harder, so the fact that you are looking at this profile now means that you or a loved one are ready to take the next step towards receiving help and healing. Life can be so difficult at times and even seem hopeless. It can feel like you're lost in a dark wilderness. We want to partner with you to help you find your way out of the darkness...one baby step at a time.

Life can be a grand adventure, but it can also present us with many challenges and obstacles. Sometimes we find ourselves overcome with worry, sadness, and uncertainty as we move through our own unique journeys. We need connection, peace, safety, and some tools to help us live our lives to the fullest. If this sounds familiar, I would be honored to be a part of your journey. I will approach each session with compassion, openness and an aspiration to empower you to live a full and meaningful life. You are an important asset in your life and I aim to help you with this in mind.

Bio video on my website...When you pay for therapy, you're expecting something of tangible value. All too often what you get instead is a nice person on a couch and little else. That’s not me. With high energy and humor, I help people recover from sexual addiction; I help couples lost in conflict and hopelessness; and I help parents with teens and young adults. I work with sexual abuse, attachment wounds, and traumas/PTSD of all kinds. I am a Christian, and I approach therapy from a clinical perspective. We can integrate your faith as much as you feel comfortable, or not at all.

I believe therapy is about growth, healing and relationship. We all carry burdens which weigh on us daily. Some heavier than others. At Mercer Counseling Center, therapy is not approached as a method of "fixing" people. Therapy is viewed as a path which leads to shifts and changes in one's life which can provide more peace, personal growth and healing for both the mind and body. I utilize a systemic approach in order to allow individuals and families to view problematic issues from a larger, more holistic perspective in hopes of capturing more opportunities for change, healing and relationship.

The human experience can be challenging at times, but can also be beautiful and meaningful. Learning that both are normal parts of the journey can be empowering and allow one to reach our dreams and goals by overcoming the blocks and pain that keep us from reaching those dreams. We can learn to grow through pain, enjoy moments of pure joy and build community. I am a Licensed Masters Social Work, Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor, Equine Therapist and Certified Thanatologist along with EMDR training. I have worked with a wide variety of clients over the course of my 23-year career.

Healing requires honest care without judgment. In order to provide individualized treatment and support, I will work cooperatively with you to clarify your treatment goals and draw from a variety of methodologies to create a plan that fits your needs. My style is warm, open, encouraging, and direct. I consider myself an active therapist, combining experience, education, creativity, with a realistic and effective approach to treatment. To me, an individual should be treated as a whole, including the mind, the body, and the (soul/self)- whatever that is to them.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
