I work with anxiety, family and marital conflict, life transitions, stress, depression etc.
Have you ever felt like the world was ending or has your mind raced with a million thoughts and worries? Have you ever experienced high conflict in a relationship thinking things will never change? Did you ever struggle to accomplish what you think are basic tasks or lack the motivation to get out of bed in the morning and brush your teeth? Sometimes life can just feel overwhelming. These struggles are more common than you think and you are not alone.

I have extensive expertise and success working with teens and adults in individual, couple/marital, and family therapy,.
Life can be highly complex, with obstacles overwhelming the healthiest of minds. The decision to seek counseling is often not an easy one. Successful therapy is more than the absence of symptoms or issues, it is a life enriched with increased self-awareness/compassion/empowerment. I will help you recognize and build upon your strengths, challenging restrictive/limiting beliefs/behaviors, and grow toward wholeness, confidence, and joy. Healing happens in relationships when there's true and honest connections with others, but more importantly within oneself. Finding and using your "inner voice" is often the key needed to begin meaningful change.

Congratulations on taking the first step- it’s often the hardest! We all seek happiness, self-gratification and inner peace; and at times we all need support getting there. I have been practicing as a clinician in the field for over 15 years. I have worked in various professional settings helping clients with issues of trauma, stress, anxiety, loss, grief, chronic illness, and relationship and interpersonal issues. “Create a new therapy for every patient” (Irvin Yalom, The Gift of Therapy, 2002) No two individuals are the same and so each therapeutic relationship is distinct. The connection between client and therapist is a unique one, and unlike any other human experience. My years of practice have taught me that the development of trust provides the framework for change to occur. Whether it be a need to understand yourself better, deal with a transition or loss, navigate relationship issues, change unhealthy patterns or better manage debilitating symptoms associated with anxiety or depression, therapy can provide the environment and tools.

Over the years in my work with children, couples, families, as well as those struggling with substance use and other difficulties, I think about rocks. Specifically, rocks that weigh us down emotionally, due to difficult childhood experiences, troubling relationships, and from events or challenges one faces in their lives. Many clients come into counseling with the belief that they are inherently flawed. Inevitably, during our work together we uncover some of the rocks that weigh them down emotionally. The resulting awareness can be quite effective in relieving or reducing one from those old self-defeating messages.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
