I specialize in working with individuals who struggle with depression, anxiety, adjustment difficulties, as well as those who have experienced trauma in their lives. I have worked with clients of all ages with a variety of issues and needs. There are times we need extra support and counsel in order to bring about healing and change. This process of healing could include challenging harmful thoughts and behaviors, addressing self-worth, learning to navigate through difficulties, and gaining insight for lasting change.

I specialize in walking with people struggling to make sense of difficult things in life. Sometimes the first thing needed is just someone who will listen. Clients that do well with me come because they are hoping to change and are willing to try something new. The same is true for children who do well.Trust your gut. Research shows that when the client feels "good" about the counselor, that feeling is a strong indicators that a counselor will be helpful for the client. I do my best to honor the courage and vulnerability it takes to seek help.

Do you feel like an outsider? Do you want to feel secure letting someone else help carry your worries? Are you ready for help with organizing the slurry of overwhelm, burnout, shame, trauma, bullying, stress overload, or anger? Many of us - myself included - aren't inherently good at knowing "how to human," and many of us weren't taught how to feel safe with our emotions - big or small. Let's work together to tackle the hard stuff in a validating and warm environment with no judgement.

There are a variety of therapeutic techniques I use to bring relief to current life issues, help resolve early life patterns and help clients create a new way of being in life and feeling they are now in control of themselves and their choices. There is a release in these techniques that normal "talk" therapy is not able to provide. This journey is about self discovery and self mastery. Those that wish to address a specific issue or symptom in their life can do so and those who want to embark on the larger path of personal transformation are also served by this work.

I've been building my experience for more than 3 years working in Community Mental Health increasing my knowledge of mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more.
Queer, Latina, bilingual (Spanish-speaking) therapist, welcoming LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities. Are you looking for a mental health service where all the different parts of you are explored? Though traditional talk therapy can be helpful, oftentimes a more broad approach will allow you to heal from past traumas and current life stressors, to be able to enjoy life again. Treatment is never one size fits all, I believe in a broad, person-centered therapeutic approach.

Being human is both beautiful and hard. Along with joy and happiness, we can feel anxious, depressed or experience other forms of emotional distress. Together, we will investigate what your experiences of grief, loneliness, isolation, and anxiety may be trying to tell you about your life and where it may be possible to change these conditions to find more joy and happiness. We will explore larger questions about what it means to be human. As a therapist at Self Space, I seek to create a safe space where you can feel seen, heard, and understood so that you can have the courage to look inward and discover what may be holding you back.

My therapy practice is based on a belief that everyone has a unique history with many experiences that shape and transform our ways of being and interactions. Sometimes it can be difficult to know who we are, who we want to be, or how to take the next step.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
