Some recent clients came to me with issues related to job loss, multiple miscarriage and infertility, cancer, infidelity, LGBTQ issues, separation, and oppositional adolescent behaviors.
As a psychotherapist and professional coach for over 25 years in NYC and Westchester, I work with families, couples and individuals to deal with the challenges, changes and crisis that occur in our lives when we least expect it. As a family therapist my practice addresses couples in conflict, separation and divorce as well as adolescence. My clients include women in transition with career and relationships as well as coping with anxiety, infertility and depression. I am also a certified Bereavement Counselor assisting those with parent, child and sibling loss.

In my experience, most people reach out for help when they realize that the coping skills and strategies they are utilizing are not working for them, or they may be overwhelmed by a particular event, such as the loss of a loved one. I have a warm and nurturing style, believing that often only when we feel supported by another are we best able to realize our potential. Many of my clients are suffering from depression, relationship issues, stress, anxiety, trauma, and grief.

is how we try and understand grief.
Death and/or abandonment of a primary caregiver early in life often lays the foundation for anxiety and depression. Untimely losses can resonate both in the body and the mind creating a fear of moving forward. In therapy we explore attachment issues from the perspective of early development. I also see patients struggling with other losses, including cognitive decline in themselves or their family member. I have an in-depth and empathic understanding of how families and individuals live with the intense stresses of not only of personal loss, but everyday life.

People often ask me, "What is the purpose of therapy?" I believe there are a few answers to that question. First, you come to therapy to defrost grief, unexpressed rage and other negative feelings, e.g. traumas, losses, betrayals. You also learn to re-parent yourself. Second, you come to have a better transition in your work or love life, or to improve your performance and personal relations. Finally, you get to share your dreams and goals in a safe environment, with no judgment, and to produce amazing action plans to manifest your best life ever.

My areas of expertise include anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and life transitions.
We all experience times in our lives which test our resilience and leave us feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what our next steps should be. Often we realize that we should make some changes in our lives however the thought of doing so can sometimes be so frightening that we stay stuck in patterns, careers or relationships that no longer serve us. I will provide a skillful, warm and compassionate environment to empower you on your journey of self-discovery, help you navigate change, heal from past trauma or cope with a challenge you are facing.

Life can be challenging. Sometimes you strive toward something meaningful even though it's not easy. Other times we struggle with what blocks us from a satisfying life - grief or depression, anxiety or trauma. What if you could refocus energy from uncomfortable thoughts and feelings and, instead, pour it into pursuing a meaningful life? More time with family. Enriching a loving relationship. Chasing a career goal. Improving yourself. I believe we can lose ourselves in struggles that take us away from healthy living. But you can aim for a way to deal with internal difficulties and engage in purposeful living. I'd like to help.

If you are feeling bad about yourself and aspects of your life, therapy can help improve your self-esteem, mood, and the quality of your life. I work with adults and adolescents who are struggling with a wide range of issues. Some are confused and unhappy about their relationships or troubled by their performance at work or school. Others come into therapy because of a crisis in their lives, such as illness, divorce, or the loss of a loved one. I also see people who are having trouble adjusting to a life transition, like going away to college or becoming a parent. Still others are bothered by events from the past. Whatever the issue, feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed and/or angry are common.

There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you. ~Maya Angelou Too often we walk through life fearful of telling our real story. But when we tell our story we free ourselves from unhealed wounds. Telling our story helps us to find our strength and recognize our resiliency through difficult times. Emotional well-being is one of the most important parts of an individual's life. Unfortunately it is a part of life that we often forget to take care of. We all deserve to enjoy the lives we live. You are worthy of a life you can enjoy!

With compassion and acceptance, I would like to help alleviate the distress you may be experiencing at this point in your life. In the safety of my office, we can explore areas in which you may feel stuck or overwhelmed. I have worked extensively with individuals seeking to overcome addictions; who wish to make sense of relationships; who are struggling with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, loss, or sexuality; and who are experiencing major life transitions. By looking at internal dialogue and seeing where thought patterns may be self-defeating, I can help shift these to more optimal, self-nurturing thinking.

Are you anxious or just really excited? Once upon a time, when we were faced with a predator or a life or death situation, anxiety served us well. Your natural reaction to fight or flee kept you out of danger. But in this modern world, even when you aren't in any real "danger," you'll have that same reaction. If you are about to approach your boss to ask for a raise, your body produces adrenaline which puts you on edge - it affects our behavior, it affects your ask. We don't do certain things that are scary because we just don't like feeling anxiety. But, no ask - no raise.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
