I have training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPT for PTSD), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).
I center culture and the intersectionality of your identities in my work as a therapist. I was trained psychodynamically, which means that I pay close attention to unconscious processes guiding your behavior. I offer insight into these dynamics to help you move forward with your life goals. My clinical interventions are also grounded in efforts to challenge the ways in which you may be affected by systems of oppression.

Have you noticed that you have been feeling stuck, overwhelmed by your emotions, or preoccupied by certain thoughts? Often psychological pain has more to do with how we fight and judge our thoughts and feelings, and we end up in an exhausting internal struggle that we cannot win. I will work with you to explore this struggle, gain distance from it, and learn strategies to reduce its influence on your life. I have an active, warm and non-judgmental style. My work integrates Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), with motivational enhancement directly at the core.

Through my education and training I have learned to help individuals, couples and families move from a place of self-doubt, depression, anxiety, and shame toward self-actualization and greater authenticity so they may feel truly comfortable (and powerful) in their own skin through the use of CBT, DBT, and Family Systems Therapy.
Sometimes it feels like the world conspires against our authenticity. We often face pressure to be someone we’re not, or to paper over our complex identities for others’ comfort and ease of understanding. I was born in Austin, Texas to a Caucasian mother and African-American father before I was adopted by my Jewish parents at 2 days old. I faced judgement and pressure to choose binary race and class identities, whether they suited me or not. Navigating these pressures helped me deepen my empathy for others, my curiosity about other people, and a sensitivity to anyone who feels unheard, disregarded, or misunderstood.

I utilize an eclectic style, incorporating CBT, DBT, and other evidence-based treatment methods to help you move forward in your life in a way that is right for you.
I believe that the foundation of effective therapy is the therapeutic relationship between a therapist and a client. Without that, there is no way for trust to be built and no progress to be made. I specialize in treating adults who are struggling with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, addiction, and those experiencing infertility. I work with individuals and run groups. I know that change is not easy. I am dedicated to helping my clients create the life they've always wanted, and living it to their full potential!

My approach is rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy.
If you’re looking for help, there is a good chance that you've felt overwhelmed by your thoughts and feelings, or felt lost in your relationships or life itself. I collaborate with each individual and couple, helping them feel understood and seen, rather than jumping to any quick-fix solutions. Using principles and skills drawn from both skills based and compassion focused approaches, I strive to help clients learn more about their underlying values, sense of self, and patterns that have played out in their lives. Through this process, we work collaboratively to develop the skills and insight to move towards fulfillment and purpose.

I specialize in working with individuals who struggle with issues related to identity, relationships, and emotion regulation, employing both Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Transference Focused Psychotherapy.
The prospect of disclosing your thoughts, feelings, and experiences to a stranger can feel daunting. Will this therapist judge or accept me? Will I like this person? Will they get me? Can I trust them? These fears and uncertainties about initiating a relationship, are usually not isolated experiences. Feelings of ambivalence can permeate all kinds of relationships. Though, it is precisely through the therapeutic relationship-where laws of social convention are suspended and where you are encouraged to say everything that is on your mind-that you can begin to process and explore these questions and feelings.

I work in a flexible, broad-based manner, often layering DBT techniques for affect regulation and interpersonal skills with CBT skills for problem solving over a relational psychodynamic (insight-oriented) approach.
I collaborate with my clients to help them find a better understanding of themselves. The process may include exploring how they have arrived at where they find themselves in life; how patterns in their relationships with the important people in their lives have developed and are sustained; how emotions and emotion-laden expectations may limit possibilities; how the therapeutic relationship can provide support, insight, improve coping skills and relationships with others, expand opportunities, improve performance, and increase satisfaction.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
