We're the therapists for "kids who don't like therapy." These days - especially - teens are too often suffering and struggling in their homes and in our schools. And everyone could use some help: kids, parents, and the caring professionals in our schools. Throughout the state, our therapists and life coaches serve as "part of the team," helping teens to feel better, and do better. Together, we'll explore and better understand what's been happening, how to change patterns, and how to get better results!

I have been a child & adolescent therapist for 49yrs., & I enjoy my work greatly. I also work with parents who want advice and guidance about parenting skills. Children can change much faster than adults, and that is why I love working with young people. I try to support their strengths, encourage their creativity, relate to them with warmth and humor. I also work with parents with children, and with parents with teens if teens want me to. I like the challenge of connecting with both children and teens, ages 4 to 20. Connecting requires intuition and open-heartedness.

Feeling nervous or stressed is natural. When these feelings overwhelm us, we need someone to listen, to validate our concerns, and to help us get to the root of our problems with tools that will inspire hope, and help us regain control of our lives. I use Mindfulness Practices to help people sit with, and tolerate what comes up. I use Self-Compassion Practices to help soothe what ails you, and I often use CBT to organize our plan going forward. This gives you tools that you can use immediately, and strikes a fine balance between listening and responding.

What I love most about therapy is that it offers an opportunity for a person to explore their thoughts, feelings, opinions, and develop a more meaningful understanding of our behaviors (the good, the self-sabotaging, and the in-between). Where else in life do we get to focus on ourselves in this constructive way? Therapy is one of the best gifts someone can invest their time, energy, and money in that will benefit all facets of their lives.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
