Okay, so I'm thinking if you're here looking for a therapist, maybe you feel like your life has become a complete shit show. Or maybe you're just so sick and tired of the same old, same old, but you don't know how to stop or change it. Or maybe you feel frozen in time by the trauma you experienced in your life. Maybe you feel so stuck that any sort of hopeful, positive, and rewarding future is completely out of your reach. OR maybe it's something else like the inability to manage your emotions, or stop using, or push past the storm or grief.

If sleep is a basic human function, why is it so damn difficult? We hear all the time the dangers associated with not sleeping the magical eight hours each night. For those of us for whom sleep does not come easily, those messages do nothing but reinforce fear and anxiety. Hours laying awake wondering if we’ll ever sleep lead to more anxiety and sleeplessness. We relive the day: what mistakes did I make because I was too tired to think clearly? We think through the next day’s responsibilities: what can I get away with canceling? Medications only work short-term, if at all. Will the bed ever be more than a torture chamber?

Not all therapists are alike and choosing one can be a challenge. Therapists practice in all sorts of ways and use all sorts of methods. I offer talk therapy. It’s just like it sounds. You talk and I listen to you. Essentially, our objective is to study your mind. On your own terms and at your own pace, you offer the study material. I am interested to know what makes you who you are. Hopefully you are interested in that too and if so, we are already on the same wavelength.

I have over 12 years of experience in licensed therapeutic work with individuals, couples and families, am a certified trauma professional and dually licensed substance use counselor.
The pain of trying to connect with your loved one and feeling shut out or powerless to affect change can leave a person feeling defeated, sorrowful, anxious and/or plum exhausted. This makes sense because I believe that we are created for connection, so much so that we come to anticipate others being responsive and engaged. Therefore, when there is dissonance, we feel it in our bones. My goal is to provide a safe and supportive space for you and your loved one to explore areas of struggle, to heal moments of rupture, and to develop fulfilling relationships.

As a trauma-informed therapist, we will work together to explore how your life experiences have shaped your ability to cope and interact in relationships.
Life can be extremely difficult creating feelings of discouragement and hopelessness that hinder the ability to see a solution. Perhaps, you have tried so many times you just feel like giving up. You may try to relieve your suffering or intense emotions by using maladaptive coping strategies such as substances, food, sex, or acting in ways that harm yourself or those you care about. These choices may have left you feeling even worse, isolated, and all alone. You may even feel that you do not belong or fit in. You are at the point to where you just want to understand yourself and regain a sense of control in your life.

I have facilitated groups and created curriculums focused on disordered eating, substance use, body image, neurobiology of addiction and trauma, relationships, empowerment, family education, mindfulness and yoga.
My approach is rooted in the experience and belief that we have the answers within. I want my clients to not only survive the challenges they are facing, but to thrive and live a life that they love. My clients are often incredibly intelligent, creative, and driven. I have seen my clients accomplish amazing things when they get clear on their goals and apply their gifts toward a fulfilling and meaningful life. My goal is to help you get beneath the layers (often thoughts, behaviors, and relationship patterns) and get down to your core. Much of our work focuses on aligning your decisions and actions with your own truth.

Are you an ambitious BIPOC but fear you won’t have the energy levels or emotional stability to maintain your goals? Do you struggle with needing things to be perfect, doubt your abilities, stress, struggle to focus, or feel down on yourself? Feeling like a burden all the time & hiding parts of yourself makes you feel stuck. Time management is off and your once helpful routines are a distant memory. And still, you're doing the things you need to, but feeling exhausted, alone, & overworked is not sustainable. You know there's a better way to move through the world and you're ready to feel lighter, organized, supported, & sustainable.

I have been a therapist many years; working with depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, relationship and family issues, self-esteem, masculinity, gender and sexuality, identity, religion and spirituality, career issues, and much more.
I want to say hello and acknowledge the strength, courage and determination it takes to seek help. Therapy can be an enriching, powerful journey. People come to therapy because they want something to change and want to better understand themselves, their relationships, and the world around them. Therapy can also be uncomfortable and hard work. Experience has taught me that human beings possess the most amazing resilience, strength, and capacity to heal, whatever challenges they have faced in life. I work to build on these strengths to help people achieve the changes that they want in life, and challenge what doesn't work.

Hi I'm Alison Cross! I am a psychotherapist, and I provide both in person and virtual services in Georgia and North Carolina. It’s important to have an idea of what feels like the right fit when you’re looking for a qualified person to talk to. The problem is, how do you know? So here's what it looks like with me. When my client leaves our session, my goal is for them to feel heard and respected.  I want my clients to feel like they’re talking to a real person.  How else can trust be built? My style has been described as 'down to earth, gentle, and encouraging.' I also have a great sense of humor that comes in only when appropriate.

Happiness often feels as if it belongs to everyone else. The steps you've taken seem to only go backwards, no matter the intent. Difficult situations and regretful choices trap us in hopelessness. You feel lost even though you feel as if you've been down every path. You are ready for something to change. One thing all my clients hear me say is that “it’s easier for us to choose to be miserable and remain where we are now; however, if we choose to be uncomfortable for just a few moments, we may achieve something we thought not possible.”

I primarily work with those struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, grief, phase of life adjustments, etc.
I have been working as a counselor since 2017 and have experience in multiple settings including higher education, private practice, and community nonprofit. My heart for survivors of interpersonal violence, including sexual assault, is what led me to counseling. However, I serve clients with many struggles and concerns. I do not want anyone's past experiences or negative core beliefs to hold them back from living a meaningful life.

I work with clients to access their core negative beliefs, identify a positive adaptation, and update their internal operating system in order to function outside of, and move past their trauma.
Ever find yourself repeating the same unhealthy patterns over and over again? Reading all of the blogs, listening to all the podcasts, memorizing Brené Brown quotes? Feeling like part of you “knows” something, while another part “feels” differently? “I know I shouldn’t allow people to treat me this way, but I feel like if I speak up, they’ll leave me.” Most of what we struggle with today comes from beliefs we developed long ago - beliefs that may have protected us, or helped us make sense of our world at that time. Sometimes these beliefs create a pattern of behavior that is no longer helpful.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
