I believe that clarity regarding who you are, what you believe, and why you believe it are among the greatest predictors a good and joyful life. I also know that a "joyful life" can sound absurd when you're struggling with depression and anxiety. My clients and I talk about their ideals and underlying beliefs and joys as context for their struggles. Together we examine the presumptions and expectations that--when left unchecked--lead to *so* much heartache. We work together to create a narrative of what could and might be instead, along with a solid plan for how to bring new realities into being.

Do fear and worry prevent you from living life the way you want? Are you always imagining the worst-case scenario? Are you afraid to try new things, or go to new places? Do you sometimes feel "stuck" in old, memories that are bringing you down, or keeping you from moving forward? Or perhaps stuck in relationship patterns that are no longer healthy for you? I want you to know that you are not alone. I have spent over 20 years treating folks with these issues. I'd be honored to help you get started on your healing journey.

I'm experienced in addressing issues such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, grief, and self-worth.
I have over 6 years of experience working with victims/survivors of domestic violence and abuse. Entrusting someone with your most painful experiences and deepest thoughts is the scariest and bravest thing you may ever do. Together we can unravel the familial, cultural, and societal messages that have told you that you are not enough, that you are at fault, or that you deserved what happened to you. It would be an honor work with you.

Anxiety, Addiction, or Depression might have you feeling like you've lost touch with the life you really want. You might feel alone in all this, but I promise you're not. I help people just like you learn concrete tools and strategies to achieve the life you want. It's ok if you aren't sure what you want. We can figure it out together and build a roadmap for how to get there. The most important thing that a client needs is a therapist who is nonjudgmental, compassionate, relatable, and down to earth - so I work hard to embody these qualities.

Offering ONLINE sessions. It’s hard to be a woman! We feel like all the pressure is on us. We keep trying so hard to do it perfectly, but life still isn’t going the way we planned. We have the pressure of career, fertility, parenting, romantic relationships, time for a social life. There's all of that and then we notice the past we’ve been running from creeping up on us. It can be exhausting, not to mention overwhelming. And is anyone talking about how hard getting pregnant can be? It's supposed to just happen easily, but month after month the pregnancy tests keep coming back negative. It feels like our bodies are failing us.

The most powerful tool available to you is not merely realization of who you are...it is the option to create who you want to be. My privilege is to work with clients who are growing choice in how they think, respond, and, therefore, feel. Unique as your story is, you are not alone in your needs - relief from anxiety, resolution of conflict, or ability to trust. Whether you feel stuck completely or have been circling the same chapter without evolving...good news. You have permission to turn the page.

Stress and suffering are both undeniable aspects of the human experience. Many humans choose to deny, avoid, and repress emotion as a survival tactic. "I can't handle this. I'm overreacting." (Nice try, brain, but invalidation and avoidance actually tend to make things worse for us in the long run- the emotions we try to run from grow). I am passionate about empowering others to live authentically and wholeheartedly- in alignment with their goals and values. My approach is very direct, while also being warm, validating, and compassionate. I specialize in the treatment of anxiety disorders in adolescents (13+) and young adults.

I'm passionate about helping people become more authentic, self-aware, and empowered. A lot of times we begin this by understanding and healing wounds from childhood, past relationships, and other experiences that have left us feeling stuck, anxious, avoidant, and unseen. We now know that trauma, stress, depression, and all psychological experiences are held in the body, making it difficult to move through these with talk therapy alone. I offer EMDR and somatic therapies that support healing in the nervous system for deep, real growth.

I am not able to accept new clients at this time. I have over 35 years of experience as a mental health clinician. I am trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy - which means that I believe that who we are as adults is shaped by the past relationships we had in our families. The difficulties we have in our work, relationships and within ourselves, can be managed better and overcome, when we have greater understanding of how these earlier experiences have shaped us. Change happens as this understanding opens up new possibilities for what we want for ourselves, and how we experience ourselves and others.

My clients are adults experiencing challenges with anxiety, mood disorders, life transitions, trauma, grief and loss. I believe deep listening can be an antidote to our increasingly challenging world. My therapy style is collaborative and strengths-based, helping people tap into their inner wisdom and resources. I am fascinated by people - their stories, challenges, interests, hopes, loves, struggles, and goals. I particularly enjoy helping people discover and change thinking and behavior patterns that are no longer useful, uncover neglected parts of themselves, and grow into the successful people they mean to be.

You did everything “right.” You got the job you worked hard for and found a partner that checks (some of) your boxes. You go to yoga, read all the self-help books, and even tried to have a 5a-9a before your 9a-5p. But you have nothing to show for it. You’re exhausted, burned out, anxious, depleted, and defeated. You’re at your breaking point. This isn’t what you expected life to feel like. It’s not you. It’s society. Women have been socially conditioned for - well, forever - to live up to ridiculous, contradictory expectations. These messages are implicit, but they teach us to be small, and prioritize others before ourselves.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
