My integrative orientation uses psychodynamic, cognitive, interpersonal, mindfulness, and positive psychology techniques to help you achieve the better life you envision for yourself.
Psychotherapy can be a challenging and rewarding process. Of course, people come to treatment to talk about what's wrong, but it is also important to talk about what's right. Each person has natural areas of strength we can further develop to help increase coping skills, reduce distress, improve relationships, and develop a more positive outlook.

You did everything you were supposed to do. You went to college, got the job, found an apartment but you still feel like crap. You've been on a million dates, but it never seems to work out. At this point, it feels like you're going through the motions. On paper, your life seems great. You're paid well, you have friends, and your Google Calendar is full with events. Your parents brag to their friends how wonderful you are, but you feel guilty for not measuring up. You're not happy and you don't know why.

My primary goal as a clinical psychologist is to help patients develop more fulfilling, meaningful and rewarding relationships through evidence-based treatment. My approach to healing integrates principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy (IPT). I work collaboratively with individuals to create a safe space and a therapeutic alliance where clients identify aspects of life that are causing difficulties and symptoms. CBT and IPT enable clients to uncover and to change unhelpful patterns of social behavior, distortions of thought, and to improve present day coping skills and management of emotions.

Are you feeling sad or angry or afraid? Are you feeling overwhelmed...exhausted? Are you feeling the pain of a break-up or loss? Has someone in your life left the home or died? Maybe you feel your life is in shambles...for whatever reason. Maybe you are worried about being happy in your job or having enough money for your needs? Our lives and dreams can veer off track at times and leave us feeling lost and alone.

If you’re not feeling like yourself lately, you’re not alone. I don’t know many people that have not been affected in some way by the Pandemic and its related stressors. And it's not as if life was stress-free before COVID, either. The world is spinning faster by the minute, and the expectations placed upon us by work, relationships, and family can feel exasperating. We demand a lot of ourselves, and sometimes we feel that we’re not living up to our own standards, or that we’re not where we should be in our lives, that success and happiness are eluding us despite our best efforts. Therapy can help you get back on track.

I value curiosity and connection. I entered this field with an understanding that taking care of our minds is essential to living healthy, fulfilling lives. I believe an important element of a healthy mind is healthy supports. I place emphasis on building a collaborative relationship, where with warmth and some good humor we can figure out together what a healthy mind might look like for you.

I also co-lead an Interpersonal Process Group, where members receive support from each other, learn about their interpersonal patterns, and experiment with new ways of relating to others.
Whatever brings you to therapy, talking to a well-trained, warm and sensitive therapist is likely to bring relief. I believe that a collaborative, genuinely caring therapeutic relationship is the key to successful therapy. Within the context of an empathic relationship, a person is safe to get to know her or his own feelings and habits, and where they come from. They are then unbound to repeat the same unhelpful patterns.

You have a past, a present, and a future, and for many, the distinction between the three is difficult to untangle. Past traumas, strained relationships, social and structural challenges slow you and it becomes a challenge to draw on your own strength and resiliency. Whether you are working through life transitions, dealing with depression, anxiety, physical and emotional trauma, career issues, or relationship struggles, we will remain open to the possibilities of now and allow you the clarity to write your own future.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
