Chronic Pain sufferers: I work from the perspective that chronic pain is constructed both physically and psychologically and that awareness of our unique emotions, ideas and expectations about our pain is a principal therapeutic ingredient toward healing.
Sometimes normal life challenges like changing careers, becoming a parent or changes in relationships can contribute to difficult emotions and result in behavior that make us feel stuck, unproductive or even self-destructive. For many, these experiences also leave us feeling anxious, depressed and sometimes struggling with chronic physical conditions. Exploring how your current challenges relate to your temperament, past experiences and needs can give you the tools to feel better. I can provide the support and guidance needed to help you explore, develop awareness and make informed decisions you can feel confident about.

Chronic pain/illness is dear to my heart.
You may think of yourself as bad, worthless, crazy or sick. You may feel shame for behaviors you have done. You may wish the ground would swallow you up. You may have no energy to face another day. You may know that beneath that darkness and gloom is a beautiful soul. It is okay to be human and to have ups and downs. It is okay to need someone to embrace your journey and tread the waters of life with you. You are worth the fight. You are deserving of peace. You matter. No amount of trauma, pain, challenge, illness and broken-heart can change that.

Relationships aren’t easy. We all bring pain and patterns from our past into current relationships, making them feel loaded, tense, and stuck at times. It can be overwhelming trying to navigate strong emotions, betrayals, challenging life events, or just everyday disagreements. But with awareness and understanding we can let go of the constraints of the past and make changes in our interpersonal lives.

Life experiences can bring pain and conflict resulting in depression, anxiety and coping with substances. I frequently hear the expression of loneliness, emptiness and feeling unfulfilled in people's lives and the sadness, disappointment and anger over relationships with themselves, partners, family and friends that fail to satisfy those needs. Experience has taught me that feeling heard and understood generates a sense of hope and stimulates movement toward insight through exploration and examination of one's inner life. Psychodynamic psychotherapy offers the framework and space for this work, leading to corrective emotional experiences and a more satisfying life and relationships.

Stress and trauma impact all aspects of our well-being. In many ways our physical health, emotions, thoughts, spirituality, and hopes for the future may be affected. It is a privilege to be a therapist because patients entrust you with closely held and often pained parts of themselves, along with parts of themselves they are excited about and proud of. I see our work as the creation of a place where these different parts of the patient's self can come into the room and be acknowledged and recognized. Therapy is also a place where you, as the patient, can use my listening ear to help you withstand pain and anxiety. Please see my website: zanjacobusinsightpsychotherapy.com

SE works to resolve symptoms and promote emotional healing and is particularly helpful in treating chronic anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, dissociation, and somatic pain.
Therapy offers profound ways of responding more effectively to life's challenges: understanding and managing mental health symptoms and developing healthier, more adaptive coping strategies when facing problems; tools for resolving difficulties and finding more fulfillment in relationships; the possibility of working through past and present trauma, grief and loss; and the opportunity to recognize how our thoughts, beliefs and behaviors affect our relationships to ourselves and others and how self-awareness creates the possibility of change and new experiences. I work with individual adults and adolescents, as well as couples.

I have come to accept that the very thing that causes pain in our lives can be the opportunity for transformation and joy. Death, divorce, loss of employment, and now with Covid-19, are unavoidable human traumas. We simply can not defeat these losses. What we can do is bravely embrace our frailty and slowly discover our inherent well-being and resiliency. Through a trusting therapeutic relationship, you can begin to mend the fragments and feel the soft strength within you.

I believe psychotherapy is a tool, whereby clients can recognize both the conscious and unconscious factors that contribute to their pain. While people often have similar problems, there is no one size fits all solution. I work with clients to not only identify their problems, but to effect a solution, whereby the client can understand the behavioral patterns that contribute to their pain. Together, we can formulate a plan to achieve the change needed to have the peaceful, fulfilled life you see for yourself. Whether we need to discover more about the past or focus on the present, I will develop a proper treatment plan .

I create a warm, friendly, and welcoming environment where we can explore what’s happening in your life now to collaborate on what might be possible for you in the future. Then, we will partner to understand what burdens you’ve taken on from your past—burdens that may have limited your belief systems or distorted your experience—to blaze new pathways towards your release from pain and entry into freedom and joy. I specialize in working with clients who struggle with anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. However, my approach is not a one size fits all formula. I tailor my work to the individual and their specific needs.

In my practice, I take pride in treating everyone as an individual and consider differences in their histories, personalities and the different ways they cope with their emotional distress. I consider these differences and similarities extremely carefully whenever I design a patients treatment plan. BENEFITS There are five goals that are almost always achieved when under my care. 1)Increased insight or improved understanding of one's own mental state. This can range from simply knowing one's strengths and weaknesses, to understanding their symptoms are signs of mental illness, and to deepen their awareness and acceptance of inner feelings.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
