I offer an environment where change can be explored in creative and practical ways. Mindful conversation and reflection, compassion for self and the practice of both cognitive and somatic strategies are incorporated into each session. I believe that therapy is a co-created experience. It is important to me that people find new resources and enhance the ones that are already available to them. My approach is influenced by somatic psychology, interpersonal neurobiology, attachment theory, developmental, relational and psychodynamic schools of psychology.

As your therapist, I am your empathetic guide, helping you to build a new, compassionate, and empowering relationship to the pain that you experience.
Sometimes, when the pain that we encounter in life is overwhelming, we can find ourselves feeling stuck, consumed by emotional struggle, and disconnected from what matters most to us. As we wrestle with difficult feelings like self-doubt, self-judgment, shame, hopelessness, or fear, we can begin to believe that there must be something broken inside of us. Instead of feeling engaged in life and tapped into self-enriching behaviours, we can find ourselves being pulled away from our heart’s deepest desires for who we want to be.

I've worked for over 17 years with survivors of trauma and vicarious trauma - sexual, physical, emotional, mental and or neglect. Often these traumatic injuries appear in life as anxiety, depression, addictions, flashbacks, unhealthy relationships or chronic pain. I attend with safety and empathy to these patterns and habits that appear in belief systems and emotions, and to the important role the body plays in responding to, storing and repairing harm. I specialize in including mindful attention to the body with talk therapy to help clients unlock the painful legacy of trauma.

I bring a mindful/meditative practice, from my own life and from my education to be of service to you and whatever is ailing you. No problem is too big or too small. Whatever is impacting your life, in a negative way is worth sorting through together. I have a special interest in working with people involved in healthcare because I've spent the last 10 years working in hospitals. Pain and suffering are part of life. How we live and learn from our suffering is our life's work. Once we discover ourselves, our true nature, we are free to live with more happiness and love.

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
