WELCOME.What brings someone to therapy is always deeply personal and deeply compelling. Such an experience is unique, and complex. Thus to fully acknowledge, validate, and to understand requires skillful integration of listening, empathy, theoretical knowledge, clinical acumen, compassion and, most of all, willingness to fully engage in the process. I am a seasoned clinician well-versed in a variety of therapeutic approaches. This offers each person I work with an approach that is individually tailored to your unique goals, needs, and challenges. Inherent in this process is open dialogue so we maximize the efficacy of our work together.

Psychotherapy is a journey of discovery and growth. “We know what we are, but know not what we may be” William Shakespeare wrote. As a psychotherapist I strive to facilitate that journey by creating a safe, comfortable and respectful environment that allows for free expression of thoughts and feelings. My psychoanalytic training provides me with the expertise and skill to look deeply into the experience of each client and to work together on overcoming the obstacles that stand in the way of one’s happiness and satisfaction in life. I am also an Emergency Responder & Public Safety Certified Clinician with over 12 years of experience.

I love working with people who have come to therapy because they really want to change something about their lives that isn't working. Being in therapy takes a certain amount of courage, and those who show up openly to the experience and bravely start working are satisfying to work with. I'm also interested in those who can commit to having a real relationship in therapy. Based on my own personal and clinical experience, the development of a warm, empathic, safe relationship is key to therapeutic success.

Therapeutic alliance and connection are essential for couples and family therapy to be successful. My strengths lie in joining with couples and families to guide them to hope, reconnection and renewed understanding. I like to jump into the spaces between partners and family members to explore things from mutual vantage points. I'm continually amazed and humbled by people's capacity to grow when given the right support, tools and incentives for positive change in their lives.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
