She also has experience treating substance and alcohol use disorder and is supportive of multiple avenues to recovery including a 12-step framework.
Carolyn (she/her) works with individuals, couples, and families. Her approach is integrative, but grounded in a humanistic framework, believing strongly in the individual’s innate capacity to heal and the transformative power of the therapeutic relationship. She believes that therapy begins with a good relationship and fit between counselor and client and works hard to establish trust and safety early on.

I am currently accepting clients for premarital counseling. I am a clinical social worker, addiction specialist and a certified supervisor. I support healing by fostering healthy relationship. I found that clients that value a psychobiological approach (relations between mind and body) tend to be drawn to me. I work with individuals and couples who don't want to settle in unhappiness and worry. I support my clients through transitions and change. My work with clients revolves around supporting them to prioritize their needs, as well as to identify coping mechanisms and resources available to them.

Psychotherapy is an opportunity to enhance learning about behavior, emotions, relationships, and oneself. My goal is to work through the difficulties you are experiencing now while we also build your resiliency to prevent or minimize future difficulties. I ask clients to devote time in between sessions to our work: to increase how accurately we understand your concerns and to take the therapeutic work into your everyday life. Treatment effectiveness relies heavily on the match between therapist and client. If it is not a positive match with me, I assist clients in finding your best match.

Deciding to venture into therapy is never an easy decision so it's important to note the strength it took to make it this far. I believe the goal of any type of therapy is to make the uncomfortable comfortable. My goal is to help you navigate the difficult emotions, intrusive thoughts, and impulsive behavior through a behavioral based approach.

I am a person-centered therapist who uses the guide-collaborator approach to provide a safe space to empathetically build a therapeutic rapport with clients. My theoretical model of choice is CBT with elements of CPT, NET, and DBT. I meet my clients where they are in their stage of readiness for change. I find this is the optimum approach in being responsive to the individual's needs. This approach allows my techniques to be flexible and integrative. I incorporate psychoeducational components on symptom impact of diagnosis, the influence of negative schemas, porous boundaries, ineffective communication styles, and attachment styles.

My approach to psychotherapy is that of a humanist; that is, successful therapy results in your continued evolution into your true self. My therapeutic style is gentle and engaged, and I respect your intelligence. I strive to provide an atmosphere of care and compassion which allows you to curiously explore what events, past and present are contributing to your challenges. It's important to me to take the time to understand your values and desires so that our work is grounded in how you see yourself.

My whole career I have worked with teens and young adults. I love working with young folks because they are at a time in their lives where they are constantly growing and changing in so many ways. Sometimes growth can be a real challenge and it can create pain and conflict, but it is my goal to help teens, young adults, and their families to move through these moments and to become the people that they want to be. I work alongside young folks and their families to identify what the major hurdles they face are and then help to figure out how can we all work together to overcome them.

Finding the right help in times of stress, conflict, fear, and emptiness is important, even if it is difficult. Choosing a counselor is about finding someone you feel confident can understand you where you are, and that you trust to help find the path forward. The people I serve value my openness, compassion, curiosity, insight and calm. If you are struggling with trauma, stress, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, or feeling worthless, then I would like to help you find the pathways to healing that best work for you.

I’m passionate about working with chronically ill adults and adults in their 20s-30s having difficulty navigating the many challenges of adulthood. If that’s you—hello there! You’ll want to know what therapy with me would be like. Put simply, my approach emphasizes noticing. It sounds easy, but many of us are ‘programmed’ not to notice what we're feeling or what beliefs we’re operating from. It actually takes quite a lot of courage & curiosity to notice. Together, we notice whatever is there. Often this means starting with the parts of us programmed not to: What's scary about noticing? How did they come to believe what they believe?

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
