My approach to therapy is gentle, perceptive, and honest. Utilizing contemporary neuroscience and traditional mindfulness, I cultivate a therapeutic environment that is ripe for transformation, health, and joy. Clients appreciate my warmth, authenticity, and the sense of safety that I create. I enjoy supporting my clients in exploring core beliefs that have been limiting their freedom. As a practitioner, I value all avenues of experience (thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, memories, images, and dreams) as valid pathways into the inner world.

I draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches in my clinical practice including CBT, DBT, and mindfulness-based practice.
Rumi wrote, “Don’t turn away. Keep your gaze on the bandaged place. That’s where the light enters you.” We spend a lot of time running from our pain, trying to drown it out or stuff it down with distractions--work, relationships, media, alcohol. When we stop running, stop hiding, we are able to face our pain head on. Only then, are we able to be fully present and aware, which is the first step to acceptance and later, transformation. Partnering with a therapist can make this feel less daunting. I can teach you skills to manage your emotions so that they won’t overwhelm you. Together, we can help you find where the light enters you.

I utilize different techniques to help my clients, such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), somatic experiencing (SE), mindfulness, biofeedback, Internal Family Systems (IFS), yoga, and more.
We often feel lost, stuck, and helpless when we struggle to find solutions to our everyday problems. At this point, our problems can become obstacles blocking us from living the best days of our lives. However, psychotherapy can help us overcome these obstacles by teaching us how to cope better with our emotions and thoughts, gain insight into our problems, make impactful changes, communicate effectively, find solutions, and stop engaging in self-sabotaging behaviors.

I utilize therapeutic approaches such as Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, DBT and Motivational Interviewing to assist each individual with developing self-awareness.
Are you living a purpose filled life? A life that you enjoy waking up to and beginning your day with a strategic plan to live on purpose. At one point you felt optimistic about life then out of nowhere you were triggered by a memory from the past which led to your downward spiral of emotions. Now you are questioning your life's purpose and reason for existence. Or perhaps confused as to why you have experienced certain encounters leading you to feelings of stress, distant behavior, agitation, or perhaps hopeless.

Christal Nelson is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and substance counselor with 6 years of experience. Before Christal entered the mental health field, she enjoyed a career in EMS and medical transport for approximately 15 years. It was the medical field that fostered her passion to assist in the mental health field, and it also geared her empathy toward grief, trauma, and addictions. In addition, it gave Christal an early insight into burnout and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), so during her tenure as a therapist she became certified in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).

Most influential modalities are AEDP, mindfulness, EMDR, Inner Relationship Focusing.
What is it that brings vitality? What gets you stuck? Often times we don't realize, we are not taught, that the key to well being is our relationship with self and with what is actually happening, not what we think should happen. As we learn to trust what is arising rather than believe it is bad, and we learn to value and process emotions and experiences, we start to relate to our self and to life differently. Setting limits, bold choices, passion and clarity become more possible and natural. And so we find: our suffering, our symptoms turn out not to be a problem to be fixed, but a gateway to our freedom.

I integrate a variety of modalities such as ACT, CBT, narrative therapy, and mindfulness to help clients address anxiety, self-esteem, life transitions, grief/loss, chronic illness, and identity exploration.
NOTE: I am currently accepting new clients for virtual therapy! As we navigate the complex ups and downs of life, it is vital to have a safe space in which we can share, heal, and grow. Part of what it means to be human is to experience difficulties, doubts, and pain from time to time. But without a space to give voice to them, the challenges we face can begin to weigh us down, hold us back, and dominate the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves. In therapy, we’ll work together to give voice to your story — and give you the space, time, and support you need to write your next chapter with intention.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
