I believe in the fundamental worth and unique strengths of every individual, and that an attention to these attributes is the bedrock of any helping relationship. I also believe that much of the emotional and relational struggles we suffer in life are born in experiences of pain through which we labored to survive, and that these laborings often limit us or become self-defeating later in life. The therapeutic relationship then becomes a space of uncovering, of pursuing self-knowledge, and of re-experiencing or re-learning authentic relationship through which healing, growth, and a sense of thriving can occur.

In today's fast-paced, task-oriented world, it's crucial to reconnect with our true human nature. Even when life is seemingly going well, our thoughts and feelings can make our days and nights a struggle. Living with mental illness or going through a challenging time can be like there is an ever-looming cloud blocking us from feeling the sun. It is my belief that therapy can help us see and feel the light again. Depression, anxiety, ADHD, behavioral or personality issues, and abuse & trauma can make us feel like we’re alone and without hope. Therapy can be a place where you don’t have to go through life’s struggles alone and get to learn coping strategies and solutions.

I have over eight years of experience treating adults who are navigating mood, anxiety, trauma, and addiction-related disorders. The majority of my clients live at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities, and it is a salient part of my clinical approach to consider the implications of systemic disempowerment. Recognizing how the systems we inhabit shape our internal and external lives is critical and can be a validating, empowering experience. As your therapist, I strive to understand you in this larger context as we work together toward meaningful growth.

I enjoy working with people in a safe and supportive atmosphere where a person can be who they really are. As individual's lives are often complex and surely unique, I work collaboratively with clients to learn about their reasons for seeking therapy as well as to enliven and deepen the therapeutic process through greater self-reflection. Ultimately, I believe that human beings are self-healing, and that the symptoms and contexts that lead a person into their therapeutic journey can often teach and bring meaning in ways that enhance psychological wholeness.

I offer supportive and exploratory talk therapy to those who wish to make significant change in their lives, but have difficulty knowing how to make this happen, or even with knowing what exactly it is they want for themselves. Perhaps you have found your way here because you're struggling to find intimacy in your close relationships. Perhaps you're feeling overwhelmed or confused by your own feelings. Or perhaps you're experiencing distressing symptoms like panic attacks, skin picking, or depression (to name just a few). It may help to have someone to talk to who can help you find greater clarity and understanding within yourself.

Self-Harming Therapists
How does therapy for self-harm work?
A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.
Which therapies are best for self-harm?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.
Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?
Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
