Expertise: sexual & gender diversity, erotic pleasure, relational intimacy, honesty, breaking the drug-sex link, men (cis & trans), masculinities, men's sexuality, discovering/ owning/ exchanging power, ethical alternative relationships, Kink/Fetish/BDSM.
Do other therapists seem judgmental? Don't understand? Won't listen to you? If you need to talk about anything and everything, clients tell me I have a strong capacity for compassion, empathy, and care. At the same time, I’m forthright and candid. I see you and hear you—a whole person (body, mind, spirit) living in an interactive and interconnected world. I believe you're the expert in you - even if you're not yet aware of it. My role is to help you find that, and bring my own holistic vision, experience, training, expertise, and tools to the table, so you can work to be the best possible version of you. I am a trauma specialist.

I am the owner and therapist behind Next Steps Counseling and Consulting, PLLC. With a focus on anxiety, life transitions, and relationships, I specialize in disordered eating, body image, and helping families support each other. For 15 years, I have provided therapy in multiple settings, including outpatient, PHP/IOP, community mental health, and private practice. I spent ten years of my career in clinical and administrative leadership but felt a calling to return to direct service in response to the current mental health crisis. I opened a virtual private practice and have loved being able to return to therapy and direct care.

Accepting new clients! Reaching out to a therapist can feel vulnerable and overwhelming–I’ve been there too. I remember the fear and self-doubt involved in asking for help, but most importantly, I remember the therapists who helped me through. I’d love to do the same for you.

I value creating a collaborative relationship that fosters trust and safety by infusing warmth, curiosity, humor, and authenticity into how I relate to others. As I learn more about your experiences, we will work together to explore your concerns and identify techniques to better manage them. I listen for patterns to help you draw connections between current and past life events and how they are impacting you in the present. I hope to create a space for you to bravely reflect on changes you want to make in your life that will lead to a more fulfilling present and future.

Let's clarify a few things! Often people who experience anxiety, depression and panic attacks feel like they are stuck forever. They have gone through difficult life challenges or tough transitions that are taking a toll on their ability to cope as well as they would like. If you are going through one or more of these challenges, you are not alone. Seeking help through therapy can be the first step to taking back control of your life. I utilize a holistic and engaged style to achieve both comfort and trust, blended with authentic and respectful therapeutic techniques.

I view myself not as an expert- someone tasked with helping to “fix” something wrong- but as a co-creator of relational space that holds potential for new ways of being and understanding ourselves, others, the world, and our experiences within it.
Whether you are searching for meaning, clarity, increased fulfillment, or relief from specific symptoms or stressors, I consider it a privilege to support those I work with in their processes of healing and growth. Above all, I privilege authenticity, transparency, and a sense of agency in the therapeutic process. I am deeply passionate about challenging commonly held assumptions about therapy, namely that it involves a relationship between a “sick” person and a “healthy” one.

Do you find yourself feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure about how to go forward with your life? Are you dealing with intense feelings of frustration, disappointment, and distress? Left unaddressed, these feelings can accumulate and contribute to symptoms of anxiety, depression, and anger. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy can be a welcome respite to assess the situation, get support, and move towards a more adaptive response to life's challenges.

Therapy is a wonderful way to practice self-care and it is not just for those in crisis. I have experience working with adults experiencing life changes, depression, anxiety, identity development, and distress related to relationships and family. I also work with couples who have communication issues, who are building the foundation of their relationship, and who are experiencing conflict.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
