It's not easy to make a decision about needing some clarity and support. No one received a playbook on life and often times what used to work to feel good stopped. We can pause, and examine feeling overwhelmed stressed or stagnant. You may be struggling with perfectionism, work, family, relationships or a general sense of malaise or anxiety. Even highly accountable professionals face these issues. Education and success offer no immunity to the everyday issues of life. Most of us look good on the outside.

It's a privilege to assist individuals and couples who want to make their lives better. I love my work, even more than when I received my initial social work degree. Returning to school later to get my doctorate and teach, I always maintained a private practice. In a nutshell, my philosophy is that I partner with my clients to figure out what they can do to improve their relationships and sense of well-being. Though I have a special interest in infertility and incest survivorship, I work with individuals and couples who struggle with any number of life challenges.

You are not alone. Fear, anger, anxiety, insecurity are some ways our minds informs us that we are in need of something more. Maybe it is quitting an unhealthy habit, discovering who you are, or setting new boundaries in relationships. I will work with you to discover how to change the behavior or thought patterns that may be keeping you from thriving and feeling empowered in your own life.

The crux of my approach is simple, but versatile: I use anything and everything available to make breakthroughs possible. We all do better with an expansive toolkit. EMDR for "stuckness" / trauma and Gottman methods for couples to repair & connect. (Well worth YouTubing either for a sense of them.) Once we understand each other and you are insight-equipped, we'll put insight into action. But in ways that feel authentic to your personal experience of things. Clients often report that my approachable, humorous, "very human" style makes therapy a much more effective experience even when exploring difficult content.

You spend years looking for someone who gets you, someone who completes you in so many ways. Sometimes you just can't find that person. Or you always mess it up. Or you do make a life with someone, and then you discover that you're arguing all the time, hurt, and lonely. Maybe relationships are not your issue: It's a career thing, an illness or a loss that you can't bounce back from. As human beings, we seem to need to give ourselves to things, to love and be loved. So why is it so hard?

Change is hard. But change is necessary when we find ourselves in situations where we feel sad, anxious, angry or stuck. My ultimate goal as a therapist is to help you develop more options in life -- to help you realize your potential in love, work and play. This involves the development of new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving. I will be your collaborator in this process. I will strive to create a safe, empathic and non-judgmental environment that will allow you to identify and explore your current struggles. Working together, change is possible.

I am comfortable working with a wide range of issues, and working with me is best for clients who are interested in not only talking through their problems, but physically moving about them and getting a felt sense of everything that’s going on. As a dance movement therapist, I think the body can be a marvelous source for solutions and insights, when the movement is approached in a way that’s comfortable and safe. Talking is also an important part of the process, as we are whole mind/body systems, and we work best when both are accessible and well connected to each other. Resolving and integrating the past is part of the work.

Life can leave us dissatisfied, overwhelmed, and disconnected from ourselves and others. Painful feelings like these can lead us to feel isolated, lonely, and unseen. I want to help you feel seen and join you in creating the change you are looking for. In therapy we can unpack, make sense of, and create new insight to bring you closer to relationship satisfaction, feeling content in your day-to-day life, and a sense of self-understanding. I want therapy to be a co-created space that centers your needs. I hope to meet you with warmth, authenticity, and collaboration, honoring the strengths, values, and experiences you bring.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
