My other specialties are: family of origin issues, low self worth, anger management, and childhood trauma.
Hi. My name is Janie. Life today can get very busy. It seems like people are always in a hurry, It is very easy and convenient to say that we do not have time to address issues that are impacting our lives. The reality is that an issue that is impacting one area of your life is impacting all areas of your life. The decision to attend counseling can seem daunting and complicated. It might take time to find the counselor that is the right fit for you. Think how would you and your loved ones feel if you finally addressed something that has been in your "pending file." for a long time?

Are you wanting immediate relief from your grief and trauma symptoms? Or maybe you’ve been in therapy for a while, and you feel you can’t get unstuck. Having these painful emotions or images can leave you feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about the future. The pain can be isolating because others may not fully understand. Starting the healing process may feel daunting, given the range of intense emotions you're experiencing - from moments of numbness, fear, or even guilt to sudden outbursts of tears & anger. You need someone who understands and can help you put the pieces of your life back together. You want to feel like you again.

If you are experiencing degrees of anxiety, depression, or anger, and don't fully understand where it is coming from and what you can do to manage the way you feel, I can help. I see people who identify as stuck, broken, or out-of-balance. It could be a relationship, a job, or loss of confidence in some area of life and unclear how to move forward. Most of us believed if we just went to school and got a job, or met someone and fell in love, we would live happily-ever-after. No one told us what to do if it didn't work out the way we thought it was supposed to. Therapy is the perfect place to find the answers you might be looking for.

In my professional as well as my personal life, I have observed that nearly every person is facing some sort of difficulty in their lives. Whether personal issues, family issues, parenting difficulties, anger, depression or lack of motivation, everyone struggles at some point in their life. What makes these difficulties potentially overwhelming is that many of us have been taught to keep our feelings to ourselves or maybe some feel as if they don't want to burden family or friends with their problems. Maybe we are fearful of being criticized, misunderstood or judged.

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
