In addition to psychotherapy, I specialize in psychological assessment, diagnostic assessment, general neuropsychological testing including evaluations for dementia and competency, sports neuropsychology, and separation and divorce counseling.
I combine a unique and specialized form of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) based on Choice Theory with a Family Systems approach to treatment. I view maladaptive behavioral patterns as a result of inadequate or dysfunctional life choices. I assist my clients in recognizing these patterns of behavior and encourage them to draw realistic and practical solutions to the things that are hindering growth and happiness through the choices they make in life. I work collaboratively with my clients using a "here and now" problem-solving technique and develop a treatment plan that uses psychotherapy, exercise, nutrition, and social support networks.

You don't have to try to find your way alone. This experience can be a transformative and empowering one for you. Asking for help comes from a place of strength, not of weakness.

My specialties/clinical interests include: depression, self-compassion, trauma, grief, identity, adult ADHD, relationship difficulties, Alzheimer's/dementia, and existential issues.
If you’re interested in a therapist who shows up authentically, provides heartfelt warmth and empathy, and engages with you like a real person (i.e., doesn’t mind using humor or the occasional curse word when appropriate), I'd love to hear from you! Being alive is hard. Our shared world buzzes with relentless motion and change, oppressive systems often feel fixed and difficult to budge, and working towards healing and growth can feel daunting if not sometimes impossible. I aim to co-create a therapeutic relationship that is supportive to you as you navigate the seemingly endless joys, sorrow, and complexities of our world.

My name is Robert and it would be an honor to be your therapist. The biggest complaint that I hear from people about their previous experiences with therapy is that their therapist didn't DO anything. That's not me. I have a very active, solution-focused approach. Not only do I want to be there for you as an empathetic listener and learn to speak your emotional language, but I also want to help you take ACTION. To me, that means helping you identify the problem and find skills and strategies to make an immediate impact on your situation. My approach is down-to-earth and grounded in reality.

You are a unique individual, and your therapy should reflect that! I draw from a diverse range of modalities tailored to meet your specific needs. This world molds us into who we become, including the aspects we may find challenging to embrace. My fervor lies in using psychodynamic modalities including trauma-focused and attachment based approaches to uncover how those life experiences have shaped your thoughts and emotions, while also using aspects of Emotion Focused Therapy to help identify and discover those unhelpful thinking patterns and coping mechanisms that may be influencing you today.

The therapeutic process is a collaborative one which has potential for transformation, heightened self-awareness and a sense of integrated wholeness. I believe the relationship between client and therapist is at the heart of the healing process which is why finding a therapist who is the right fit is essential. In my work I integrate elements of Gestalt therapy, IFS, EMDR and somatic approaches to explore patterns, uncover their origins and address accompanying emotions. I engage my clients through warmth, open-mindedness, direct communication and when fitting, humor.

Alzheimer's Therapists

What are the first-line treatment options for Alzheimer’s disease?

The first-line treatment for Alzheimer’s disease is often medication, which may be prescribed based on the severity of the disease. These include cholinesterase inhibitors, memantine, or a combination of the two. Behavioral treatments can help people cope with emotional distress, such as anxiety or anger, and explore lifestyle changes related to housing, caregiving, sleep, and finances.

When to seek treatment for Alzheimer’s?

It’s best to seek treatment at the first signs of dementia. Early warning signs of Alzheimer’s include memory problems, such as forgetting appointments or directions, as well as trouble concentrating, paying attention, retrieving words, and carrying out daily household tasks. An early diagnosis can help people slow the progression of the disease with treatment and plan for the future in terms of housing, support, finances, and legality.

Are there specific medications to treat Alzheimer’s?

Medications approved by the FDA to manage symptoms of Alzheimer’s include galantamine, rivastigmine, and donepezil for mild to moderate Alzheimer’s, and memantine, donepezil, and the rivastigmine patch for moderate to severe Alzheimer’s. These drugs can help manage the disease, but no drug currently cures the disease. Medications recently approved by the FDA, such aducanumab and lecanemab may slow the disease course, but aspects of their effectiveness are still debated.

Are there natural treatments for Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s disease cannot be cured via natural remedies (nor via medication), but some lifestyle habits can help forestall it or slow its progression. Lifestyle activities that can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease include regular exercise, a healthy, well-rounded diet, stimulating cognitive activity, time spent socializing, adequate sleep, and stress management as needed.
