After working for the past 6.5 years closely with survivors of sexual abuse at a prominent NYC hospital, I have developed a strong passion for continuing my work with survivors. Recently, many survivors are being triggered by events in the worlds of entertainment, national, and local news. The increased reporting has created significant public awareness leading people to flashback to painful and traumatic events of childhood and adult sexual abuse. You do not have to live alone with those memories, thoughts, feelings, anxiety, and depression. If untreated, the effects of trauma can have a lasting life impact.

I work with children, adolescents, and adults with a wide range of psychological and interpersonal challenges in life, such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, life transition, relationship problems, and developmental disorders. I believe that psychotherapy is a process in which client and therapist collaborate in order to help client to improve self-understanding, overcome painful emotions, and discover new and widened perspectives about himself/herself, others, and life. I facilitate client's discovery and development of balanced and integrated personality so that he/she can transcend his/her psychological conflicts.

Trauma is not what happens to us, but what happens inside of us, as a result of what happens to us. Getting to the core of why you think, act, and behave the way you do is the key to creating the life you want — the life you’re meant to live. If you’re someone who’s felt stuck, keeps coming back to the same destructive patterns, or has tried therapy before but didn’t gain lasting change, you have come to the right place. My first priority is to understand you as a person and work collaboratively to create a treatment outline to meet your goals.

My name is Christian, and welcome to my practice. Parakaleo is a Koine Greek word that means “to call alongside.” It was a way to describe a counselor – one who walks alongside you to encourage, strength, and comfort. In a digital age when everyone is becoming more connected but alone at the same time, it is hard to discern the competing voices inside your mind and heart. I hope to walk alongside you during this season to help you find that voice inside that you need hear, and unlock its resonance – in your challenges, passions, and relationships.

My style as a psychotherapist is engaging, warm, and reflective, and I place a great emphasis on building trust and connection as the foundation of my clinical work. From there, we can begin to explore difficult and sometimes painful life experiences and understand the emotions beneath it. By paying attention to these experiences and emotional signals, you can better understand yourself, both past and present. I believe, at birth, we are all hard wired for healing and self-repair but we need the support of trusting and caring relationships to access the powerful drive within ourselves to heal, grow, love, and flourish.

If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, burnout, and increased reliance on substances to cope with uncertainty and confusion, you aren't alone. The Covid pandemic took the world by surprise and left us feeling unsafe and uncertain. Ever since, it's been crisis after crisis from climate change, deep-seated political divisions, and the threat of violence in our city and on a global scale. Talking about what's difficult to articulate is therapeutic. If you find yourself without the anchor of personal values and purpose, life can feel adrift and unmoored. I am here to help you make sense of it.

I am dedicated to working with clients whose personality and life experience were shaped by more than one culture: You might be an international student or in your 20's or 30's navigating anxiety. You might have been raised by 1st generation Asian parents or one and half or 2nd generation immigrants. You might be struggling in a relationship where you and your partner come from different cultural backgrounds not feeling understood. You are in the relationship but you both feel alone in the relationship. I love to help. I work with clients individually and as couples.

My previous careers in corporate marketing and educational counseling for teens help me to understand the dynamics of complex relationships in work and family systems.
Did you ever wonder what your life would have looked like if you had made some decisions differently? Did you ever have anyone to help or guide you, unconditionally, in exploring all your options in making those decisions? My focus as a therapist is about learning your strengths and resilience to find the best version of yourself, identify and validate all layers of your emotions, and help you create solutions for life's challenges. I enjoy working with individuals looking to build a strong sense of self, who may be struggling to balance their own needs with the needs of others.

I am an experienced (20+years) clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst in full-time private practice on New York City's Upper West Side. I work with adults and adolescents in psychotherapy and in psychoanalysis. Many of the people with whom I work are quite intelligent, thoughtful and accomplished, but they still feel they could benefit from further personal inquiry into problems in living they may be encountering. I have multiple areas of specialization including work with mental health professionals, college students, faculty and administrators, physicians, parents, LGBTI people, racial and ethnic minorities, sexually abused people, and athletes.

As a clinical psychologist/psychoanalyst with a specialized focus on children, adolescents, adults, and families, I accompany my clients in meeting their personal goals and in improving relationships.I am particularly sensitive to multicultural issues and I work collaboratively with each client based on their specific needs. I specialize in different forms of psychotherapy, including cognitive-behavioral therapy and psycho-dynamic therapy. I also work with individual patients using EMDR, a therapeutic technique to clear traumatic experiences which get "stuck" in emotions, body and brain and cause symptoms which bring clients into therapy.

We all face challenges and stresses that take significant emotional resources and effort to navigate effectively. Often, we are able to cope with our difficulties on our own or with the help of friends or family. Sometimes, however, we face challenges that feel overwhelming and beyond our capacity to manage by ourselves or even with the support of loved ones. At these times a psychotherapist can help in a unique way. Psychotherapy can help us to identify personal tendencies and patterns, and thereby understand how we unwittingly perpetuate certain problems in spite of ourselves.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
