You’re seeing the warning signs that something is off with your child. It’s heartbreaking to watch them suffer with persistent sadness, extreme irritability and violent outbursts. What about the excessive worry, changes in mood and constant complaints of having a stomachache? Your family has been through so much lately, and the intense wave of transition has changed the dynamic in the home. Your child has a hard time communicating what they are feeling and might not even know what’s really bothering them. While everyone struggles to keep up with the changes, communication and connection have all but disappeared in the chaos.

My practice is psychoeducational assessment only. Please note that I do not provide therapy. My clients are typically families of students in preschool through college who have suspected exceptionalities such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, TBI, giftedness, etc. Client goals typically include improved functioning, clarity, diagnosis when appropriate, strategies, recommendations, and advocacy. What clients say is most helpful is having test data and my clinical judgment to provide clarity, then help them navigate what to do with that data and how to get the help their student needs.

Prior to private practice, I was a mental health services researcher, with expertise in developing school-based intervention programs addressing both internalizing (anxiety, depression) and externalizing (defiant, oppositional behaviors) problems.
I am a clinical psychologist specializing in cognitive-behavioral therapy for children, adolescents, and families. My approach to treatment is structured and collaborative, engaging and pragmatic, and tailored to the strengths and needs of the client and family. I strive to help young people and their parents to (1) develop a conceptual understanding of their presenting issues and problems of concern, (2) examine how their beliefs and feelings affect their behavior choices, and (3) develop and practice specific coping skills and strategies, emotion regulation skills, and step-by-step problem solving skills to better manage these issues and other stressors.

Arts and Hearts Therapy is a creative approach to your child's needs. Is your child currently struggling to manage their big feelings? Are they finding it overwhelming and challenging to navigate their relationships with family and friends, establish a positive self-image, or manage their academic responsibilities alongside extra-curricular activities? Would you like some guidance and support around boundary setting, positive discipline practices, and authentic communication with your child? I've worked with children in academic settings since 2006. Various components of Early Childhood Education play a big role in my practice.

Sometimes, your teen has experienced a traumatic event or is just having difficulty navigating life’s changes, such as divorce; the death of a family member; adoption; or adjusting to school, friends, and their self-identity. Communicating how they feel, especially to their parents, is not a teen’s strong point. As a result, both the teen and parents become frustrated. Adolescence is a significant life transition. Without some guidance (or interpreter), the process becomes a rocky road for all involved.

To begin, Distance Counseling is offered for clients who cannot make face to face sessions. I believe barriers seldom produce opportunities for change. On another note, I am usually asked, what person is best suited or needs counseling? Honestly, there are many ways and templates (Word document and Google Search) geared to answer this question. Those methods sound enticing. Yet, they operate from the focus of a proprietor. Another clinician may indicate the best suited clients are willing and committed. I don't need the BEST SUITED CLIENT, just those who ask for help. Let's Work Together.

Understanding that for most, making the decision to enter therapy is a difficult step, it is essential that I not only connect and relate, but I provide a degree of noticeable relief or insight within the first session. This is especially true with adolescents, young adults and men, who tend to be resistant at the onset of the therapy process. I meet my clients where they are at, build upon their strengths to address their struggles, establish mutually agreed upon goals, and become an advocate for their overall growth and well-being. I am affirming, but direct in my approach.

Children often experience scary, confusing, upsetting, and traumatic things. You may see your child/teen struggling with negative self-talk, anger, sadness, trouble at school or with siblings, difficulty with emotions, divorce, or loss of a loved one. As a parent, you may have read several books and articles, and still feel lost on how to help. There is hope. I work with your child/teen and family to provide a path for growth, build a stronger connection, communicate, & resolve conflict. Parents will learn how to be co-regulators, understand their child/teen better, and how to set boundaries and deal with big behaviors.

Starting the journey into counseling can be scary and overwhelming. As a therapist, I want to come alongside my client and help them become the expert in their progress.  My experience has prepared me to work with children/adolescents, adults and families struggling with feeling stuck in unhealthy patterns of thinking. My counseling style is eclectic but is centered on warmth and acceptance with gentle nudging as we navigate through uncomfortable feelings. I am especially passionate about working with individuals who suffer with anxiety presentations.

Oppositional Defiance (ODD) Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for oppositional defiant disorder?

The treatment of Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) will involve multiple approaches designed to help both the youngster and their parents, sometimes including medication. A therapist will help a child learn ways to regulate their emotions, curb their impulsiveness, and counteract anger, defiance, and disruption, while showing parents ways to bring these lessons into their home. A technique designed for children with conditions like ODD, known as Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), may also be used. CPS addresses a child’s concerns and rewards appropriate responses while discouraging harsh punishment or criticism.

How does treatment for oppositional defiant disorder work?

Treatment for ODD addresses the issues underlying a child’s defiance and disruption, the emotional regulation and impulse-control skills they lack, and the way adults respond to them. ODD therapy is based on the idea that children with the disorder understand the difference between right and wrong, that they want to behave well, and that, with help, they can. By responding to the child with empathy instead of harsh criticism, ignoring nonviolent behaviors, and rewarding positive actions, a therapist, and the other adults in a child’s life, can help children improve their behavior.

How long does therapy for oppositional defiant disorder take?

Therapy for oppositional defiant disorder is not a short-term undertaking. Depending on the severity of a child’s symptoms, their age, the presence of other conditions like ADHD, anxiety or a mood disorder, and their family dynamic, it can take months before improvement is noted. The cooperation of parents and teachers is crucial, because the skills learned in therapy must be practiced in real-world situations, with all their potential triggers.

Does oppositional defiant disorder go away?

ODD can remit following treatment. ODD is often diagnosed in nursery school, and early intervention is essential for a positive prognosis. In two-thirds of children, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, symptoms resolve within three years.
