“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, "Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner." I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.” ― Carl Rogers

What would it be like to experience the world, and yourself, without the assumption that you are a problem to be fixed? This is one of the questions I love to explore in my work with clients. I work collaboratively with my clients to uncover their unique values and strengths while identifying practical strategies and resources to make life more comfortable now. Many people seek therapy because they have reached a point where they feel stuck, frustrated, ashamed, or lost and are unsure of what the solution is. This can be an exhausting and frightening place to be. Whether these feelings result from anxiety, depression, difficult relationships, work stress, or life's transitions, there is hope for navigating and overcoming these challenges. I provide therapy in a manner that is warm, genuine, and aimed to evoke your already existing abilities and assets. I work with clients to increase self awareness, realize their potential, and cultivate a life they are eager to experience.

Taking that first bold step to reach out to a therapist takes courage and strength. As a therapist in a variety of outpatient and school settings, I have provided therapy to children, adolescents and adults for over 20 years. I believe in providing much needed empathy and support but I will also put forth the necessary energy and effort to help challenge you to grow. Sometimes unhealthy patterns and coping strategies from the past are currently interfering in reaching personal goals or in experiencing fulfilling relationships.

I have experience working in a wide variety of clinical settings, including inpatient, community mental health centers, and schools (elementary through college). I approach therapy primarily through a Cognitive-Behavioral and Interpersonal lens, meaning much of the work in therapy is focused on identifying and reframing unhelpful thinking patterns and on exploring and strengthening interpersonal relationships. However, I realize that each client is unique, so I adjust my treatment approach to best fit each person's needs.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
