As of April 2024, my practice is open to accepting new clients. Life is sometimes stressful, confusing, and painful, presenting us with unique challenges to overcome. I help clients with clinical and practical interventions to work on goals such as regaining confidence, getting unstuck, improving daily functioning, stopping drinking, and improving relationships. According to Jon Kabat -Zinn, a mindfulness-based stress expert, "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf." I believe in embracing and practicing acceptance of pain, which can lead to a decrease in human suffering.

Maybe you’re saying, “I can’t do this anymore!” And you mean it. Can’t pretend life is okay. Can’t sleep at night. Can’t fight that awful feeling. Whatever you’re facing, I want you to have a plan for how you will get through this season and move forward. I provide a safe place for your story to be heard and understood, so you can gain perspective and learn from it. As with woodworking or planting a garden, the choice to engage in counseling stirs up dust and dirt. But it’s for the sake of creating a life that is meaningful and fruitful. Often, it’s not easy, but it is rewarding. And you don’t have to struggle alone.

I see therapy as a partnership; you are the expert on your thoughts, feelings, and past experiences, and I am the guide who helps reframe and challenge certain lenses you might be using to view a situation or part of yourself. One of my primary specialties is working with those who are struggling with their use of substances. Another area of passion for me is assisting those who are experiencing anxiety, depression, or who are having difficulty moving on from a past event. A third focus in my practice is working with the experiences of those in the LGBTQ+ community.

My ideal client is someone who wants to find higher ground in their life, regardless of the darkness or peril that might include. I am 'gangster of the light' and unafraid to walk with persons who can't find anyone else with the courage and experience I bring to the table. Persons without extreme darkness or peril are also welcome in my practice.

Counseling is all about learning new skills for relationship and managing emotions at work, home and in the community while allowing me to coach in the process! Individuals open to working within a family setting to change behaviors, long-standing relationship patterns or addictive behaviors are favorites with me.

We all have a story to tell. In my 20+ years of counseling individuals and couples, I’ve had the honor of hearing many stories that exhibit the strength of individuals healing from grief, injustice, trauma and chronic illness. I’ve been inspired by the resiliency of the human spirit and the hopefulness that inevitably develops as the narrative of one’s life unfolds. It can be a painful process but one that yields great rewards as we gain understanding of what our story has to tell us about our past and helps us to plan for our future.

Are you feeling frustrated because you are stuck in the same patterns? Have you spent years trying to figure out why you do what you do but still struggle trying to make changes? There are ways to break away from these patterns and gain new understanding. Or are you feeling trapped in an addictive lifestyle with unhealthy patterns that you continue to repeat over and over again. This often leads to ‘beating yourself up’ every time the substance wins over your desire to say no.

One of the most universal human experiences is the desire to feel understood and valued. When we don’t feel understood, we become disconnected from our friends, family, and even ourselves. While suffering is part of the human condition, suffering in silence often leads to difficulties with our loved ones, and personal growth, complicated relationships with food, alcohol/drugs, and our own bodies. My hope in our work together is that your healing empowers you to create a life that is authentically aligned with your values.

I'm thrilled to have a full time office to offer clients in person sessions, as well as video or phone for those who prefer. I especially enjoy seeing couples in person as we grapple with issues of communication, fidelity, substance use, intimacy, or even whether or not to continue the relationship. Similarly, I like working with adult individual clients to work on a behavior or relationship that is keeping them stuck, or on ways to understand and manage emotions and needs to get the best out of life.

I believe everyone can benefit from therapy. Therapy provides a space that allows one to talk freely without judgment. Therapy can be hard work and with that, it should be a stress-free environment and made enjoyable to attend. I also advocate for physical exercise to help alleviate symptoms of mental health. In my experience, I have seen how talking alone can help. As therapists, we are trained to listen and not just hear what you are saying. Sometimes it takes being heard for the first time for a client to have a breakthrough.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
