If you are in a committed relationship that is stuck in painful patterns, I can help. If you are having sexual problems such as low sexual desire, I have particular experience and training that can help; even when the passion has been dormant for a long time. I have much experience with other relationship challenges as well such as healing after an affair. I love working with couples and look forward to helping them discover inner resources that can help in unexpected ways. Pain or divorce are not your only options. There are ways to be interpersonally creative. In addition, I am a certified EMDR therapist and use it often.

Break the cycle of trauma to heal not only yourself and your family, but generations to come.
Looking at the world through the eyes of a child, it is easy to see how we are born with goodness and light. The experiences we have in life can make that light hard to see at times, but looking within can help us get back to who we were truly meant to be. I can help guide you to release some of the burdens that are holding you back. I do therapy through an attachment lens, focusing on the link between early attachment figures and struggles in the present such as depression, anxiety, and interpersonal relationships. I am trauma informed and certified in EMDR, Play Therapy, and Sandtray.

I'm Laurie Fitzgerald, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I help people struggling with anxiety, depression, domestic abuse/violence, trauma, PTSD, LGBTQIA+ issues, and more. My work integrates relationship-based and cognitive-behavioral approaches. I strongly believe in the inherent ability of every individual to find their own answers to the big questions that bring people into therapy. I see my role as a therapist primarily as a facilitator and guide. During times of struggle or uncertainty, we often need someone who can ask questions and provide the space for inner answers to be found.

Our life experiences can lead us to question our identity and purpose in the world we live in. This can lead us to anxiety, depression, and trauma. Do you want to improve how you face challenges, function in your relationships, and face overwhelming feelings? I place heavy importance on addressing trauma. Trauma disintegrates the parts that make up your whole self, which can leave aspects of who you are hidden from your awareness. Left unaddressed, anxiety and depression can worsen, which can rob you of the necessary connection that all human beings need to thrive. I aim to help you process unresolved trauma.

You hope for a therapist who won't shy away from the difficult topics. Every part of you is welcome here. As a trans therapist and HAES-informed provider, I believe that you deserve a non-judgemental space where you can build a sense of safety and trust on your own terms. You want to shed feelings of shame and guilt that keep you looping back to unhealthy behaviors. I believe in your ability to learn new coping skills and your capacity to become even more resilient. If you decide you want to, together we can face the memories and emotions you've had to avoid in order to survive. You choose the destination, I’ll help you get there.

Interaction with friends, co-workers and family have become frustrating - hijacked by anger, regret, leading to fights, shame, guilt, depression and self-esteem issues. Wondering why...how come I keep making the same mistakes, poor choices with family, in love, at work, with friends...with self. Breaking destructive patterns and the resulting unhappiness IS possible. YES, it is possible.

Do you feel as though your anxiety and depression are unmanageable? How about feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or helplessness like you’ve hit rock bottom and are struggling to find hope for tomorrow? Once we start to unravel the details of our past and trauma we give ourselves the ability to process feelings that we have long suppressed. I aim to collaborate with you and provide tools to decrease the challenging feelings you are currently facing and achieve a more integrated and balanced sense of self, leading to emotional healing and personal growth.

Do you struggle with feelings of anxiety, depression, guilt, or low self-esteem? Do you find yourself avoiding social engagements or so preoccupied with excessive worrying? Finding ways to navigate these difficult feelings can help you get back on track. I use a psychodynamic approach and CBT that focuses on uncovering patterns of behavior and ways of relating to ourselves and others that are often outside of our awareness. I am a licensed psychologist. My work is based on the contemporary research in the areas of development, attachment, neuropsychology, and psychoanalysis. This research indicates that a therapeutic relationship can help rework a person's internal emotional world and cognitive capabilities. The growth in therapy allows individuals to engage in more genuine and intimate relationships with others and to see themselves differently. It helps them be more effective in school and at work. I use a compassionate, practical, relational, and researched approach to help clients achieve meaningful lasting change.

For over twenty years, I have helped people recognize that their fear, despair, self-sabotaging beliefs, negative relationship patterns, and damaging behaviors are vital messages of what is needed and what is blocking their ability to reach their full potential, develop satisfying relationships, and feel more alive. Within a therapeutic relationship of understanding, insight, and connection, you will experience greater clarity and courage to make positive changes. I see my role as helping you become more fully and authentically yourself.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
