Additionally, I teach DBT skills, which increase distress tolerance, improve emotional regulation, and expand interpersonal effectiveness.
Without judgment or pathologizing, I will help you accept "what is" so you can create "what can be." People naturally move toward healthier lives and choices with the right support: empathy, authentic compassion, sincere curiosity, and validation. Together we will establish a comfort zone in therapy. In the safe haven of my office, you can explore your inner world, discover your voice, put words to your story, and move through and beyond your suffering - to find healing, peace, and joy. My clients report increased self-awareness and personal growth, more meaningful insights, stronger connections, and greater satisfaction in life.

A few modalities I practice are Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Life never goes the way we plan, especially during adolescence and young adulthood. It feels like you know everything yet as time goes by, you realize there is so much more to learn. Once you think you have it figured out, life happens and your path completely changes. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Washington State, I offer Individual Therapy to Adolescents and Young Adults. I support clients experiencing challenges with academics, socializing, communication, problem solving, and time management. We will work together to determine your strengths and how to help you move towards positive change.

People come to therapy for a variety of reasons: recognizing the need for change in their lives, facing changes difficult to accept, learning how to more effectively communicate or parent, or the need for an unbiased perspective. It can understandably be difficult to reach out for help regarding sensitive issues. I respect the courage it takes to set the intention for change & the effort involved in finding someone you feel comfortable with & can trust. I love this field of study & care about doing my best for my clients. My work with couples, individuals, teens & families, utilizes techniques garnered from 24 years of practice.

Society, family, culture, and other systems often send us mixed messages about how we should move in the world, creating dissonance and internal conflict. At times, we may lose sight of what we want for ourselves in the midst of competing voices and priorities that pull for our attention. I strive to create a safe space and work collaboratively with clients to step into the driver’s seat in discovering and reaching their own goals. Through shared exploration, we can clarify your understanding of yourself, your identity, and your story, and foster greater self-compassion and confidence to carry you through life's challenges.

When we are able to understand how our backgrounds and experiences influence the way we relate to the world around us, we are able to become more intentional in our relationship with ourselves and with others. Together we can explore how to best support you in living a life guided by your values and deepen your understanding of your identities.

Taking the first step to reach out for counseling takes a tremendous amount of courage. My approach to therapy is to meet the client where they are at to set attainable goals partnered with learning effective coping skills through eclectic therapies to find what works best for the client. Some of these include CBT or DBT; with families using FBT or EFFT; and expressive arts.

Through my training and experience I developed an expertise in helping people of various back grounds move through life transitions. I believe our present is highly influenced by our past experiences, therefore understanding our life experiences and taking the responsibility to change our present is the ultimate goal in therapy.

Does this sound familiar? Negative experiences from the past are still disrupting your life, causing shame, fear and distrust. You are feeling disconnected from your partner and your sex life is not what you would like for it to be. Maybe you’ve stopped having sex altogether. Every attempt at communication about the issues in your relationship becomes an argument and you don’t know how you got into this cycle or how to get out of it. You’re wondering if these problems are beyond repair and you feel so alone. It doesn't have to stay this way.

We are accepting new clients! I'm Makaela I believe in the power of holding space for you while walking alongside you in your healing journey. Each individual has the ability to take power in their story and write their own chapters. At the foundation of this work, I make it a priority to work through the lens of equity and social justice. Who you are, the stories you carry, and the context of where you come from are important to me. I want this space to be a place where you feel empowered, gain insight, and learn skills to achieve the goals you have set for yourself in therapy.

Evidence-based modalities of treatment are foundational to my work and I draw upon theories such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Family Systems Theory and Narrative Therapy.
You may feel overwhelmed by anxious thoughts, or wondering if your relationship with food is healthy. You may be feeling disconnected from your partner, or even from yourself. I offer a space to explore and process these experiences, to learn skills to help you cope, and to have a partner alongside you as you figure it out. I believe the relationship I build with my clients is important, because making sure you feel accepted, safe and heard matters.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
