I work from a psychodynamic and attachment-based lens.
You're feeling overwhelmed by the racing thoughts in your mind. It's been difficult to trust yourself, set boundaries, and stick to them. That can be exhausting and probably has you feeling under-appreciated, resentful, and burnt out! Imagine what it might feel like to be more grounded and resourced in your body and mind. Imagine feeling more confident in your voice and speaking about your needs. I enjoy supporting women and queer folks to lead a more integrated and aligned life. If any of this resonates with you, we might be a good fit :)

I use evidence based approaches (EFT, DBT, IFS, and Psychodynamic) from a relational, developmental, and attachment-based perspective.
I believe symptoms are often the body’s way of communicating with us. Learning to recognize our symptoms as messages to listen to, we start making sense of the chaos, and feel less out of control. I’m committed to helping you get that kind of relief and clarity, so that it becomes easier to explore the roots of what gets you stuck. The therapy I offer is experiential and relational, providing the context to name what needs to heal, process what's overwhelming, build psychological skills and confidence, grow in compassion, strengthen relationships, and find a path forward with greater freedom, meaning, and hope.

You might be feeling stuck in your relationships. You’re struggling to be vulnerable and fully present with not only loved ones, but with yourself. You’re falling into a repetitive cycle that leaves you feeling exhausted, frustrated, and alone. You’re ready to dig into your attachment history and start breaking down the shields that used to protect you, but are now a barrier to vulnerability. You know it's time to do the deep work and cultivate the self-acceptance and relationships you long for.

We all have the capacity for a fulfilling life. However, sometimes either our biology betrays us or we get stuck in over-learned, over-practiced loops. Sometimes the actions of others or of the larger system block or derail us. We become unsure, losing our confidence. Often we do not understand what is wrong or why, but we know we are capable of more – more joy, more achievement, more intimacy, more satisfaction. I can and want to help you reach your goals.

My focus in our work is to accompany you, both as a guide and a companion, in finding your "place in the world", both individually and relationally. You have the wisdom within for your own growth and healing. In response to the problems in our lives, we all develop survival strategies that keep us disconnected from our true self, and therefore from others as well. Because we do this unconsciously, it can be difficult to identify the ways we get in our own way.

You’re so busy taking care of everyone around you there’s no time or energy left for you. Despite this, you struggle with feeling like you aren’t doing enough. You’ve tried to manage things on your own but feel like nothing is helping. There’s this powerlessness that keeps creeping in and this gray cloud hanging over your every move. Feeling this way is impacting your relationships, work, and life. You know something has to change. Imagine the ability to be present with the people you love and the confidence to live the life you always pictured. I have helped my clients achieve this, and you can too.

Welcome to my practice. I work with individuals, couples and families facing challenges and looking for relief. I understand that talking about emotions can be difficult. Often times things have become so chaotic it can be difficult to articulate. I work to provide structure and security to help organize overwhelming thoughts and feelings. I firmly believe that change is possible when we are connected with someone attuned our pain and desires.

Most everything you value flows from the relationship you have with yourself. Discover all that transforms when you live in a way that reflects compassion toward yourself, and a deeper connection with your emotions, truth and dreams. I am a warm, genuinely caring and intuitive therapist. People I see often say that they feel safe and at ease with me, and deeply understood. Prior to a private practice, I provided therapy at the Departments of Psychiatry at UCSD and Rady Children's Hospital, and at Scripps, and trained other therapists. I use a blend of approaches to therapy and healing, and can offer tools tailored to your needs.

After practicing, studying and teaching psychotherapy for 40 years at the UC San Diego Department of Psychiatry I have integrated many different approaches to helping my patients. The most important aspect of psychotherapy is the relationship formed through an empathic understanding of the core issues and what caused them followed by a plan of action. Therapy is a collaborative process of discovery. Change comes about through understanding oneself better, learning new skills and effective ways of communicating with others. Each person's journey is unique.

I help powerful women breakthrough childhood trauma that keeps them stuck. Is anxiety, fear, panic, and unhealed experiences from your past continuing to rule your life? Do you have trouble taking care of your whole self (mind, body spirit)? Overcoming addictive behaviors? Asking for you what you need in relationships? Knowing and aligning with your purpose? You are not crazy. Your nervous system is locked in chronic fight-flight-freeze patterns that keep you shut off from a thriving life, and your full vitality. I can help.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
