In terms of population, I specialize in working with Black and brown folks, LGBTQIA+ individuals, teens, individuals moving through college, and couples.
My speciality is working with clients who are navigating depression, anxiety, grief, adjustment, interpersonal relationships, and exploring their identity. I value my ability to aid people in processing their lived experiences and navigating how to manage the harder parts of life more effectively. I believe people want to be understood ... we want to have a space where we can share the scary or uncomfortable parts of ourselves in order to understand ourselves better. I believe people need a space to process the harder parts of life to not feel so alone and to work toward living more happily. I hope I can provide you that space.

Let’s be honest - life can get pretty messy. It’s full of things like change (ugh!), other humans and events out of our control. Maybe you're having a hard time, and you don't even know "why". Maybe your relationships are stressful. Maybe society’s “-isms” (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc.) are affecting your well-being. In therapy you get to decide what is important! I get the honor of walking with you as we figure out how to help you cope, manage, grow or heal. As a queer person, I am especially passionate about working with LGBTQIA+ folx. I provide a safe & affirming space to explore all facets of yourself/your life.

I work most frequently with queer and trans populations, but will see any and all clients.
I identify as a queer person of color and hope to best serve those communities who feel underrepresented in professional fields. Common areas that I work with are trauma, gender identity and expression, career related difficulties, couples/interpersonal relationship issues, and mood/anxiety disorders. I work heavily with the linguistic ways we approach "problems" and through a narrative and solutions focused approach we would work on restoring your sense freedom as you navigate life's difficulties.

Life is complicated, and for every one of us, there comes a time when we feel lost, alone, or trapped in our circumstances. Whether we are struggling with depression and anxiety, having trouble in a relationship, or weighing heavy questions of our identity and where we fit into the world, sometimes we can't just figure things out on our own. For people in the LGBTQ+ community, couples, and nonmonogamous people, there can be even more challenges to navigate. We all need someone to listen to us, help us untangle the messy bits, and work with us to improve our lives.

The therapeutic environment offers a unique opportunity to share, confront, and enhance parts of ourselves while exploring and discovering deeper traits and skills that we may possess. As a therapist, I believe in empowering the individual through therapeutic experiences that foster a lasting change outside of the therapy setting. I cherish the opportunity to engage in this relationship and commit myself to doing the work with you and supporting your exploration. I specialize in addiction and substance abuse, trauma, anger management, anxiety and depression, LGBTQ+ - including transgender issues Support groups (WPATH trained), mindfulness cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), family issues dealing with incarceration, individuals that have had past incarceration, and major life change.
When human beings experience trauma or severe life stressors, it is not uncommon for their lives to unravel. Often we seek therapy when the support systems we have and the ways of coping that we normally use are not enough. Perhaps you have noticed changes in how you sleep, your appetite, mood, or how you engage with your world. A variety of paths lead us to struggle and we all have times in our lives when we need a little more or a little different support. Finding a therapist who is a good fit for you can be a helpful part in regaining balance.

I use a Health at Every Size lens in my work with body image issues and disordered eating, and I celebrate LGBTQIA+ identities.
I specialize in helping adults who want to explore the impact of trauma and/or improve their relationships with themselves. My goal is to help develop a deeper understanding of the root causes of client issues in addition to addressing current symptoms. I work collaboratively with clients to explore and understand their experiences, to utilize their innate strengths, and to build relationships with themselves that are rooted in self-compassion. I believe strongly that the quality and fit of the therapy relationship is what allows for the greatest positive change for clients, especially when they have experienced relational trauma.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
