I traditionally work with stressed teens, men that have trouble identifying their emotional difficulties, women that feel under appreciated, LGBT persons, and couples struggling with intimacy issues. I have a contemplative and humanistic approach to therapy that stresses the inherent value and worth of every person. How we come to understand our sense of self worth can be elaborated with sociological, anthropological, and various academic lenses, but at the end of the day, your experience of your life is what I am interested in. Trauma, anxiety, and addiction can make you feel stuck. The most important step towards healing is to address the unresolved emotion inside you. Healing requires feelings. Acceptance slowly dissolves pain. When we function from the fear and scarring of our trauma, the cycles continue until we learn how to transmute that energy into love. I apply a Holistic approach that integrates physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual forms of well-being, addressing the “whole” self. Through a holistic framework tailored to your unique needs, the goal is to support you develop a deeper understanding of the self on all these levels.

Hello beautiful people. My most treasured skill as a therapist but most importantly as a human is the ability to connect and relate with almost any one no matter your race, gender, culture, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or age. I am learning in practice and in life that no matter how old, young, accomplished or established we become there will always be a natural human yearning we carry to feel like we belong and that we matter to others.

You feel stuck and numb. You're just going through the motions, trying to get through the day, knowing you will wake up the next day just to do the same thing all over again. When you are low, you are low, but very rarely, if ever, do you have any highs. You can’t remember the last time you felt happy and wonder if you have ever felt happy. It feels like carrying the weight of the world every day and you're exhausted. You don’t necessarily want to die, but you struggle with the idea of living as you are now. You just need something to change, a hand to help pull you out of the darkness, or a little hope. That's where I come in.

As a previously practicing educational psychologist in an alternative school setting, I often encountered students who moved through the public school systems without the support they needed to learn basic foundational skills. Creating a lack of understanding of how they learn and this causes low self-esteem and low academic and social functioning. Additionally, these academic difficulties often bring about behavior challenges in school and in the home setting, as students feel incapable of learning to their full potential. These students often require assessment to further determine appropriate intervention for academic success.

You may be a parent worried about your teenager, a college student struggling to become independent, or an adult feeling "stuck" or unhappy in life. These are all very familiar experiences that I treat within my private practice. I have been helping adolescents, young adults & their families adapt, grow and thrive for over twenty years. Whether it is helping with the normal growing pains that are present at any age or helping to identify and address more serious issues (chronic mental illness, trauma, addiction, abuse, attachment disruptions/adoption), creating a supportive therapeutic environment to maximize healthy growth is my goal.

Have you ever felt alone, stuck, or overwhelmed trying to figure out who you are? Do you feel trapped in a struggle with food and your appearance? Have you tried to break free only to find yourself back in a battle with your own thoughts? Maybe it is hard to even imagine being free when your self-worth is so closely tied to your body image and when your relationship with food feels so out of control. This way of living is exhausting and can cause destruction in many areas of life. What if freedom from that life was possible? As a therapist specializing in eating disorders, I believe it is possible to find relief from your struggle.

Over human history, people have mostly lived in close-knit communities. This has eroded with the advances in transportation and technology. Most people have lost much of the social support our forebearers enjoyed.

Perhaps you are brand new to therapy, or returning for better results. Maybe you are looking for a therapist that relates to the LGBTQ+ identities/experiences you have, and how those may affect other areas of your life. You're looking for a space to be authentic and explore complex parts of who you are in a safe, affirming space. You might be experiencing anxiety, depression, confusion, or other barriers to your well-being. My priority is inviting you to share who you are so we can create positive outcomes. I combine evidence-based practices with real-world application, placing your experiences at the forefront of therapy.

Certain moments in life highlight the impact our past plays in our current reality. Emotional wounds from painful experiences shape us in ways we don't always realize. Feeling out of control, lost, damaged, or broken are often evidence of how you survived those moments. You have an innate wisdom guiding you to cultivate the life that you crave. Who you were before the trauma, before the world told you who you should be, remains. That person is buried beneath beliefs, patterns, and strategies that may no longer work. In these instances, having the space to rediscover that person is essential.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
