Much of my practice with focuses on chronic pain/illness, using a combination of somatic processing and solution focused therapy.
The diagnosis of chronic pain or illness can create a world that is not only physically painful but often psychologically painful as well. I believe strongly in the Mind-body connection and hope that working together in a safe and non-judgmental pace we can ease some of the many anxieties, frustrations, sadness, and anger that often accompany such a diagnosis. Together we can discuss and process all of these emotions in the hopes of creating new coping skills and a new outlook on this 'new normal'.

Do you feel stuck in one or more aspects of your life? Perhaps you would like to feel more connection in your relationships and at work. Sometimes things may feel so overwhelming, we lose our direction, feel anxious, experience emotional and physical pain, and don't sleep well. It's easy to get caught up in the way we tell our story, shaping habits and patterns around the roles we play.

Begin to feel your feelings, transforming them from pain to wisdom.
You are a current or former dancer, gymnast or athlete. You have undergone intense training and competition. Now, you feel stuck. You feel high demands, yet you are afraid of your power. You want to be successful. You notice that you fear failure. You may even fear success. Performance anxiety and overwhelm have gotten the best of you lately. Bullying/distrust with peers or coaches may be something you feel bogged down by. Because you’re a high achiever, you need extra love and support and wish to feel confident. However, relationships both in and outside of your craft feel unsubstantial.

My practice focuses on helping individuals, couples, and families who are suffering from emotional or physical pain or the aftereffects of trauma. We help them resolve the traumatic experience, as well as its consequences (e.g. physical pain, stress, disability, depression, anxiety, insomnia, medication dependence, isolation, etc.) Although many of our patients have not responded well to prior therapies, we've had outstanding success in helping them move from feeling a severe loss to finding a new and positive beginning. We love to work with people who are ready to change and eager to learn how to do it.

Having chronic pain, and a rather difficult life myself, I understand pain.
Whatever you are going through, it helps to have someone to talk to, who is only there for you. Lowering your symptoms, gaining skills, and insight, can bring you lifelong peace. Most people know what choices to make, the hard part is doing it. But if you can't see what benign rules you are living by, which is the rule-especially in family systems, then you can't heal. This is really the reason to talk to an insight oriented therapist. If you have watched Couples Therapy, that is exactly what therapy is utilized.

Emotional pain can feel unbearable and no one should have to suffer on their own.
My passion is helping people gain deeper perspectives and fuller appreciation for all of life’s ups and downs. I provide my clients with a space where they can express their feelings and explore their thoughts and behaviors in a non-judgmental, safe environment, where they are truly heard. While it’s not easy to be vulnerable and process painful experiences, it is the only way we can heal, find joy, meaning and purpose in life. You deserve hope and healing and I would love to walk with you on that journey.

Sometimes life is too difficult to navigate on your own. Psychotherapy is one of the most powerful tools to bring healing and transformation to your life, and choosing to pursue it is brave. You might be seeking therapy to decrease anxiety or depression, heal from a trauma, improve your relationships, rid yourself of chronic pain, or navigate school with ADHD or a learning disability. You also might be seeking therapy on behalf of your child or your family. Regardless of what leads you to therapy, I understand the importance of finding a therapist that is the right fit.

If you have been silently suffering, I will sit with you and your pain.
Many of us struggle with the core belief of "I'm not enough" or "I’m not good enough". This negative core belief plays out in romance, relationships, work and affects the simplest ways we carry ourselves throughout the day. Through therapy, we reconsider the old, worn-out, negative ways of thinking and feeling about ourselves and embrace a new truth. A truth (both authentic and strength-based) that gives us permission to see ourselves as whole beings who are inherently “Enough”. I work with people who are hurting and who need to show themselves more: kindness, compassion, trust, understanding, respect, belief, acceptance and love.

I bring 50+years of earned wisdom and my commitment to helping you - no matter how big your pain is.
Therapy is about exploring, experimenting, discovering, and being vulnerable. In our therapy together you will learn to increase self-compassion and mindfulness, and your ability to sit with uncertainty and bear witness to uncomfortable feelings and body sensations. You will gain awareness of the role negative core beliefs and thoughts have upon mood and learn how to challenge those negative thought patterns. You will learn to set appropriate boundaries by asserting feelings, recognizing wants and needs, and identifying the role shame and guilt might play in causing unhealthy, harmful, stale, and inauthentic behaviors.

People seek treatment not only to alleviate pain but also to develop resiliency, and a sense of well-being, and to learn ways to navigate successfully through life.
Psychotherapy is a partnership, shaped by the creative, dynamic working alliance that develops between patient and therapist. I am a clinical psychologist and board-certified psychoanalyst in practice for 40 years, employing both psychoanalytic-oriented therapy and cognitive- behavioral solution-based therapy. In addition, I have developed ARMM, the Applied Reframed Mindset Method. ARMM is a focused technique using tools designed to create a helpful mindset for improving physical health, emotional states, the relationship with self and others, and to achieve goals.

Suffering with emotional pain can leave us feeling disoriented and miserable in the present, and discouraged and afraid about the future. Yet we all have an innate impulse to survive, heal, and recover. You're heeding that impulse right now—all we need to begin your journey of healing is for you to keep heeding it. We'll discover the rest together, one step at a time. Imagine getting to know new parts of yourself and giving them the attention they’ve been yearning for. Hopping out of bed in the morning feeling whole, healthy, and positive. Meeting life’s difficulties with skill and finesse instead of brute force.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
