Let's be real. It's a very challenging time to be alive. I operate from a philosphy that emphasizes the power of our environment in determining how we feel and, in turn, how well we are able to function. If you feel overwhelmed, cynical, anxious, or just plain fed up, then it's probably a good time to check in with someone who can offer an objective take on things. Together, we can address things like racing thoughts, depression, anxiety, or just the sense that "something just isn't right."

During the 5+ years as a therapist I have specialized in working with adolescents and young adults in the areas of Depression, Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Self-esteem, GAD, OCD, PTSD, Parent-Child Interaction, ADHD, and Bipolar Disorder.
I believe that one of the bravest and scariest things to do is reach out for help. Many people see therapy as a stigmatize thing for only those that are in desperate cry for help and have no other choice. I can promise you that this is far from what therapy really is. Therapy is about having a safe place to open up and not be judged. It is a place to feel like FINALLY someone understands you and relates to your problems. I want to help you achieve whatever life changes you are looking for while in turn providing the most real and authentic experience.

My background with clients includes working with children and adults with past traumas, problem sexual behavior in children, generalized depression and anxiety, emotional dysfunction, behavior concerns and impulse control in children.
Gravitating through the world can be hard even if we feel things are going well. The emotional responses that happen when we begin to feel out of control can be overwhelming, leading to decisions that may not be safe or helpful. Whether you are finding ways to recover from a past trauma, or find that your depression or anxiety is taking over your day, know that you are not alone. Acknowledging that the next step to healing may require some outside guidance will bring you closer towards breaking down the walls of your emotions. I believe building a therapeutic alliance with the client is crucial in order to begin the healing process.

Trauma is something that you might have managed to put away but eventually comes back in symptoms such as anxiety, panic, depression, anger, and feeling disconnected.
Trauma is the inability to be in the present. Trauma therapy is not about understanding what happened, in fact talking about it can be retraumatizing (Bessel 2020). Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk is a world-renowned trauma research and author of “The Body Keeps the Score”, a New York Times bestseller for years.

Accepting New Clients - I work with adults and young adults who are experiencing issues such as insomnia, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, grief, or major life adjustments. Perhaps you have been trying to work through this on your own or hoping it would just resolve itself, but you have reached a point where you would like some extra support. I'm always honored when a client chooses me as that extra support, and I take the responsibility very seriously. That's not to say that our sessions will always be serious, though - I love to laugh with my clients and believe that is an important part of healing.

People come to me for help with a range of difficulties: Some have problems with relationships, work or school; others are reacting to stress or going through a difficult period in their lives. Many are troubled by anxiety, depression or other unhappy feelings, or feel blocked from being effective and comfortable at work or at home. Often they have tried treatment before, without success. I collaborate with each person to evaluate his or her needs carefully, and tailor therapy to that individual. For some people brief therapy is best, for others it takes longer.

I have extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and adults struggling with a range of issues that include depression, anxiety, parenting issues, family conflict, and ADHD.
I am very proud of the relationships I have formed with my clients. My focus is to empathize, support, and teach the tools to most effectively manage life's stressors. I strive to help each of my clients reach their own personal goals and have a realistic view of both themselves and others in the process. The hardest part is beginning to make different choices and choose those that increase our odds for success. That is where I hope to provide the most support.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
