What creates change is mindfulness and acceptance.
Attention...what does it take to get our attention? Usually, it's something unfamiliar. I work with individuals who experience a "symptom," a grief, a depression, an anxiety, a life-threatening illness, a crisis in an important relationship; a time when you are asked to pause, to pay attention to your self and bring curiosity to your life. A symptom is an invitation to look at the story of your life and visit where you have felt alone and where you need to come home to yourself in order to make this issue transform and experience more fulfillment.

As someone who has been on the “other side of the couch”, I am a huge advocate for therapy and its transformative powers. I also recognize the courage it takes to begin the journey of healing and commend you for starting it. During our time together, I will help you to determine the thoughts that lead you to feel self-doubt, anxiety, or overwhelming sadness. My goal is to create a space for you to feel heard, validated, and supported. I believe in empowering clients and ensuring a strength-based, solution-focused approach while we walk through this process together one step at a time.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, and related conditions. I have expertise in working with adolescents, adults, families, and parents of children with special needs. I strongly believe that treatment is most successful in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. I work collaboratively with each client to set and work towards personal goals. Therapy can be short term or long term; some clients come weekly for 3 to 4 months until symptoms decrease, while others remain in therapy for longer periods of time.

We have been helping people learn how to make the changes they want since 2008. Relationship woes? Existential Angst? Have a troubled teen or child in trouble? Feel stuck your life? You are not alone. There are other people out here going through this too. This is temporary. We will reach out to you, discuss your needs, and pair you with a therapist familiar with your needs. Together, you will meet, identify issues, collaborate to create a plan, follow through with some reasonable interventions, and figure out ways to make the changes last.

While working with individuals and families, I have noticed how much physical and mental health impact upon one another. I have worked on creating a speciality in addressing the unique challenges faced by women who are Black or African American that struggle with hormonal issues. Often these women feel unseen and unheard when they go to providers. My expertise lies in guiding women through understanding how their hormones intersect with their mental health and learn skills in emotional regulation and self advocacy.

My ideal client is one who struggles with achieving the goals they want to accomplish. One who has experienced trauma in the past and isn't sure how to move forward. One who has excessively negative thoughts about themselves or the world, and wants to improve how they see life. A client who has felt like they are drowning in life, in sadness, in anxiety, in fear, and wants to identify strategies to come back afloat.

Connecting with the right therapist is so important. Finding someone who can help you find words to describe your experience, identify solutions to your problems, and develop strategies to reduce your stress. When you connect with the right person you know because you feel less alone. I have years of experience working with adults, children, adolescents, and families who faced seemingly insurmountable problems. Together, we found strength in the struggle, strategies to manage it all, and ways to feel more connected. What I love most about being a therapist is the possibility.

It can be hard to recognize when you need to turn to someone for help. Sometimes having a trusted person outside your family & friends can offer the clarity and support you need during a difficult transition. I give my clients a safe space to talk where they can identify obstacles and work to become more hopeful, empowered and grounded in their lives. By exploring your thoughts & feelings, we will be able to move you forward and help you to find the support you need.

I am an empathic Psychologist who uses humor to speak about difficult topics. My goal is to help my clients reach their goals whether that be increased insight, behavior change, or managing thoughts. I use a non-judgmental and supportive stance to help my clients feel more comfortable when speaking about issues that may make them feel vulnerable. At times, I can be irreverent and direct, which helps when we find ourselves avoiding what needs to be addressed. In addition to working with clients in my private practice, I work for Northwell Health providing psychotherapy to Residents, Fellows, and other Medical/Professional Staff.

It’s okay to have mixed feelings about starting psychotherapy. I will do my best to create a warm, safe environment for us to explore what you would like to change in your life and to accept what is beyond your control. I believe everyone has internal and external resources that they can discover and leverage to help themselves feel better.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
