Collectively, we have many years of experience working with patients from adolescence onward in individual psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, couples therapy, family therapy, and group therapy.
While a person can feel better after a good talk with a friend or relative, for moderate or severe emotional distress, this relief is only temporary. Talking with a trained listener helps alleviate emotional distress for good. The doctors in our practice are trained to listen and interact in a way that helps you get to the very root of your emotional concerns.

My style of therapy includes mindfulness, resilience, and helping clients find the strength that resides in all of us. I can and will be at times very blunt and to the point but I do know that this is your life being discussed not mine. I have an inclusive feminist background and am comfortable working with all genders.

Dealing with obstacles can sometimes make it hard to reach out for support, but asking for help shows strength. I have experience working with people of all ages, with a focus on teenagers to adults and families. If you've been recently diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood, struggle with setting boundaries or expressing your needs as a highly sensitive or empathetic individual, are dealing with physical or psychological symptoms from trauma, grief, or abuse, or are facing challenges like depression, anxiety, panic attacks, burnout, or self-harm, we could be a great team to work together.

I often utilize Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cogntive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Family Systems, Behavioral Therapy Approaches, and many others.
Find yourself wanting to make sense of your behaviors and/or struggles or your child's? Curious why we act or react in certain ways? We have experiences and we all hold our own perception of those experiences which ultimately leads to behaviors. I work with clients to teach strategies, coping skills, and lead clients on a journey to a deeper understanding of themselves. I work with children, adolescents, and young adults to help them understand their interpretation of the world and how they function in it. Often times the therapeutic work involves parents due to their large influence on the client functioning at particular ages.

With over 30 years of clinical experience, Valerie takes a collaborative and direct approach to effectively create a safe space for families who face issues associated with chronic illness, divorce, eating disorders and addiction recovery. Some situations are best handled with traditional “talk” therapies, while other concerns may need more active interventions to modify an unproductive behavior pattern or lifestyle.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
