While a person can feel better after a good talk with a friend or relative, for moderate or severe emotional distress, this relief is only temporary. Talking with a trained listener helps alleviate emotional distress for good. The doctors in our practice are trained to listen and interact in a way that helps you get to the very root of your emotional concerns.

I find immense joy in others' success! From being a crucial part of a conference championship collegiate baseball team as a catcher, I've honed skills that seamlessly apply to my role as a clinician. As a catcher, visualizing the entire playing field and orchestrating actions for the team mirrors my approach in therapy. I excel in integrating and balancing strengths and weaknesses, fostering a cohesive pursuit of shared goals. Described as compassionate, caring, trustworthy, humorous, and genuine, I bring these qualities to my therapeutic practice.

Individuals/Families Challenged with: Depression, Anxiety, Interpersonal/Family Dynamics, Grief/Loss, Behavioral Issues, Career Challenges, and Life Transitions. Ages: Adolescent to Older Adult. A recurrent objective is to explore my clients' challenges to aid in developing an awareness of conscious and unconscious thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that become drivers of actions that negatively impact quality of life. Once these factors are understood, real growth can occur by recognizing new ways of thinking, acting, and exploring options to lead to a more complete and fulfilling life. Life is a journey in which there are times we encounter obstacles, in the form of challenges. These challenges may cause us to struggle with overwhelming and emotionally distressing feelings; such sadness, guilt, helplessness, hopelessness, fear, worry, or anxiousness. Negative thoughts and feelings can lead to distorted thinking patterns, low frustration tolerance or cause us to be judgmental of ourselves; ultimately effecting our mood. Far too often the inability to cope and the shame associated with these feelings causes us to feel as if we are alone. Well, I want you to know that you are not alone.

I specialize in treating Trauma (single event, long-term and attachment) with experiential therapies, including EMDR & Somatic Experiencing. These interventions recognize the need to go beyond changing your thoughts and focus on helping people regulate the body sensations and emotions that continue to be experienced. For example: a person may know that a traumatic event is over and yet continue to feel the emotion of anxiety and the body sensation of muscle tension (never truly relaxing or feeling safe). This can activate an impulse to run away from situations, become angry/defensive or shut down (depressed/ avoidant/dissociative)

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
