I am a caring and compassionate professional dedicated to helping you grow and thrive. Our sessions will be collaborative, strategic, and goal focused. Above all, they will be respectful of your path. We will identify what's not working in your life and allow time to step back, reflect, and shift your approach. The therapeutic modalities I employ are evidence-based and individually focused -- modalities shown to be effective at helping people function at a higher level and live happier lives.

Life can present with many challenges, involving navigating personal and interpersonal issues, managing goals, or simply trying to make sense of the world. As a clinical psychologist extensively trained in psychotherapy with adults, I work with individuals struggling with these issues. I have a passion for working with marginalized and underserved populations, in particular ethnic and sexual minorities. I focus on evidence based treatment, with an integrative focus on meeting you wherever you are. This involves helping to organize and focus what your treatment goals are, and clearly defining what, for you, is success.

I believe that holding space for another person, using empathy, compassion, and connection is the greatest gift we can share. My counseling process is a collaborative relationship of communication, investigation, exploration, reflection, and insight. Counseling and/or coaching sessions can take place in a variety of formats including, individual, couples, and/or family. Together we will figure out the best modality. I love to incorporate creativity, spirituality, and even nature into our work. Together we will work on creating a more flowing, wholehearted life.

I believe that the relationship between patient and therapist is important. I focus on the here and now experience in therapy, while taking into account your past experiences and relationships, as we consider aspects of your life that are causing you pain. I listen to what is happening in your life and surrounding world and will help you think about your feelings and experiences, as we examine what may be interfering with you living the life you wish to lead.

I believe that finding happiness and achieving peace is not the absence of conflict and stress, but our ability to better cope with it through better knowing ourselves. I want to partner with you to make more conscious choices, develop resilience, and empower you to make changes and address barriers that might have you feeling stuck. I provide a non-judgmental and safe space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace. I also happen to think that humor and having a good laugh is incredibly healing too.

My goal as a psychotherapist is to help you live a deliberate, self-actualized, and peaceful life. We all struggle with anxiety and depression at times. We push people away when we want them close, we act contrary to our best interest and don't know why. I can help illuminate patterns of behaviors and beliefs that impede your ability to reach your potential. Together, we can identify those invisible forces that drive your behavior and cause stagnation, pain, broken relationships, and missed opportunities. I take an anti-oppressive lens and provide space to explore the corrosive impact of external influences (ie: caste, race, gender)

There are many good reasons to start therapy. Maybe you are feeling stuck in life. Maybe chronic anxiety or depression is taking away your ability to be happy. Maybe you want to improve the relationships in your life. Maybe you want to increase your self-awareness and maximize your potential. Maybe you need healing from a traumatic event. It can be intimidating to start the process, and it can also be the best decision you ever made. Let's start the conversation, e-mail is the best way to contact me for more information. I am in-network with Medicare, Aetna, Cigna, and United/Optum and happy to work with your insurance.

Therapy might be a way for you to travel to yourself. It might provide you with new eyes for looking at an old image. And with the possible feeling that there is a way to let your guard down, untie your knots, and create new patterns. You might also find freedom in the cultivation of a wider and more balanced scale of emotions that includes joy, ire, sadness, rapture, and many more. Therapy might also show you that in addition to enduring life, you might also be fully alive.

I have been in full-time practice of comprehensive psychotherapy since 1981 and have, over the years, integrated theories and techniques from numerous approaches in order to individualize treatment. I listen to my client with my ears, soul, and training. I am interactive and believe in treating the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. I believe that therapy is a journey that the therapist takes with the patient. I work with individuals, couples, and families.

I am committed to creating a soft, genuine, relational space for my clients to get to know their inner systems. I have a graduate degree in Social Work, and I am trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS). I have been engaged with the IFS model for over nine years, and it is the primary model I use for psychotherapeutic work. I have assisted as a staff member on three Level 1 IFS trainings, helping other therapists and practitioners learn the model.

With 40 years of clinical practice experience, I can help you gain insight into yourself, your feelings, your symptoms and behaviors. I have expertise in helping people who suffer from panic attacks, anxiety, depression, loneliness, fear, trauma, grief, relationship problems, and work issues. I can help you to change that which you choose to change. I am warm, empathic, and understanding. Although it is difficult to take that first step, it is eventually rewarding to have the freedom that comes from understanding yourself better and making choices that benefit your life. I mainly use an insight oriented psychodynamic approach.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
