I have extensive expertise working with individuals struggling with: intimacy/relationship issues, eating disorders, postpartum depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, loss/trauma, and parenting issues.
As a clinical psychologist, I meet my patients exactly where they are. We work together to bring about symptom relief from the issues that have led them to therapy; to change longstanding negative patterns which continue to get in the way. The goal is to create and sustain a happier, meaningful and more fulfilling life. I have worked in many NYC hospitals including Mt. Sinai and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, as well as a fellowship at the William Alanson White Institute. Using an eclectic approach, I practice cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal and psychoanalytic techniques to tailor treatment to each individual's needs.

As humans, it is our instinct to want connection. Connecting with others can be especially challenging if you've suffered from trauma, loss and abuse. These deeply painful, often early developmental wounds can resurface in our day to day lives. These wounds can leave us experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship strain and career challenges, just to name a few.

Sometimes the bravest and most important thing you can do is just show up and ask for help. Individual and couple/partner(s) therapy can provide a safe and supportive space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and relationships, and develop the skills and insights you need to lead a more fulfilling life. I have extensive experience working with clients facing a variety of challenges related to relationships, sex/intimacy, personal growth, self-esteem, life changes, and stress management. I received my training at New York University, and I have a passion for helping clients achieve happiness and connectedness in their lives.

You may find you’re a deeply creative and sensitive person, going through major life transitions, a spiritual awakening, or a dark night of the soul. You want to grow your self-confidence and self worth, but are unsure where to start. You may feel unsatisfied with the way things are but are unclear on what you actually want and what exactly is holding you back. There may be habits, beliefs, and behaviors that are no longer serving you, but you aren't sure how to change them. I’ve been there and understand. My goal as a therapist is to accompany you as a guide on your path of personal empowerment and self discovery.

I specialize in the treatment of bipolar disorders, addictions & a mix of complex personality disorder features presented by most anxious & depressed patients, as well as business counseling & consulting; sleep problems; bereavement & grief work; & relationship issues.
My decision to become a therapist evolved as my values, my own understanding of the world & my place in it, broadened. It is this evolution that I work to facilitate for my patients as they seek to find their unique places in the world. I believe in relationship therapy, with both a psychodynamic & open systems theory base. I try to account for both environmental & hereditary variables in the treatment paradigm using direct intervention & a mix of traditional psychodynamic & psychoanalytic techniques, including CBT & DBT elements.

I also use EMDR as a means to address past and present traumas as well as anxiety and depression.
When starting therapy it's important to choose someone you feel comfortable with and can trust. I like to start by meeting once or twice to see if we are a good match. Together we will address the problem that brings you into therapy and establish a treatment direction designed to meet your goals. My orientation is Psychodynamic and my style is supportive, interactive and collaborative. Successful therapy can either be a short or long term process and I belive that it's important to periodically touch base to make sure that your needs are being met.

My client is a thinking person who wants happiness and fullness of life. Often we neglect simple rules and do not notice how we do the same things, which does not allow us to grow and move forward. Each person is unique, so there is no single instruction for life, there is only your desire to change something. Together we can study the entire chain of what is happening in order to find weak links and heal them. If you are ready to change your life and remove from it depression, anxiety, addictions, shame, insecurity, fear, laziness, lies and any other discomfort - write to me and I will help you make it happen!

I have been working for many years as a drama therapist and psychoanalyst and have helped people live more fulfilling lives. I work with individuals and couples in Greenwich Village. I am an expert on adoption issues but also work in all areas. I work well with couples and find all of my work interesting and exciting. Sometimes I use the drama therapy in combination with psychoanalysis and at other times, I just use the techniques of psychoanalysis. It will all depend on the patient.

I work with PTSD, trauma, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, relationship issues, grief, and job stress with clients from every race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender identity, and belief system.
Life is complicated. Yet, we are often given advice by those who haven’t taken the time or simply don't understand the issues. My job is to understand your concerns from your perspective. Outcome research from a 2019 APA taskforce determined the therapeutic relationship is as important as treatment type. Once a relationship based on understanding, trust, empathy, and maybe even humor is built, we can help you achieve your goals. Everyone deserves individually tailored treatment; I have found no better approach than one based on collaboration. If this is a good fit, my website allows you to find and self-schedule appointments.

I have dreamed of being a Psychologist since I was 16 years old. It took me a while to be good at my work and it paid off. Remembering the people whom I have helped have a better, happier and more prosperous life is my reward. The children I have come to visit me as adults, and thanked me for my help; couples came with their newborns, and so on. My method of practice is interractional/psychodynamic and child play therapy.

Therapy often goes into areas that were likely too difficult to look at on one’s own. People have different methods of avoiding this discomfort: drugs, engagement in risky or soul-emptying sexual practices, over-working, over-eating, over-thinking. Even yoga and meditation can deceptively serve to block out pain under the guise of “being in the moment.” Rather than encourage clients to aggressively get rid of these methods, I help them gently explore the pain or fear that made such habits necessary. I pay careful attention to ensure that clients feel safe to go through this vulnerable experience--and come out on the other side.

Everyone is capable of resolving their own issues, but there are times when doing it all by yourself leads to a feedback loop of missed opportunities and unfortunate mistakes. Therapy with me is designed to address the underlying issues that impact our lives. The world has become increasingly polarized and most people seem lost in the middle. In treatment, we will examine how to exist and thrive in this world.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
